My LaTeX file won't compile when I use the symbols “ or ”. I can not use '' instead because of guidelines.
The error message says undefied symbol.
I tried escaping via \verb{“} but I still got errors.
Another symbol I had problems with was a dash.
I have to use utf-8, and I have to do the final pdf via latexpdf and bibtex.
How can I escape these symbols without having to use additional packages?
Am I fucking stupid or something? Please help me out on this one.
For left double quote use `` (two backticks) and for right double quote use '' (two apostrophes)

Thank you for the reply, but the guidelines say I can't use those...
Any more ideas to escape symbols?

Those are the standard open/close double quotes in LaTeX. So you're required to use LaTeX, and you're also required to have open/close double quotes be “ and ”? Maybe you need to use a package like upquote. Or maybe latexpdf has some option to do that.

I realize I have been stupid. Thanks great master, your first post works now for me, I must have done something wrong.
Now I have another problem.
When I insert larger texts, everything is displayed correctly inside miktex, however when compiling I get errors:
! Missing $ inserted.
<inserted text>
$
And then a line, with unknown symbols in the middle of words. They words look completely normal and don't contain any special characters, and the errors disappear once I delete the words and type them again.
Am I missing something here? I tried copying the text out of a plain txt fail encoded in utf-8.
I narrowed it down, the error only occurs on inserted "f", and it only occurs for about 3/4 of inserted "f"s.
Am I missing something obvious? Does Tex just hate f?

f+i and f+l get merged during compilation. maybe you should explore something related
