im not experienced at all, that was just a quick hack (not even 5 minutes, the filename was obviously a joke)
>load image
>add back ground layer (white)
>select main image layer
>rough fuzzy/feather-tool select all the areas that should not be transparent (blade, fireplace, character)
>finetune the selection area (oscillating between add and subtract) with the free/lasso-select tool
>invert selection
>change-to/select the background layer
>color (white) to alpha on the selection
>...
>profit?!?
really there must be easier ways but as i learned to do it this way (alone) via experimentation, i dont even touch photoshop

oh and the white parts of the glow shouldnt be transparent either (very bright light) so add it to the area selection before inverting
