My computer wont start up properly, nothing is wrong with my monitor but it isn't displaying anything. I was just doin my thing and then all of a sudden the screen went black, I shut down my computer and still nothing.
I tried to completely turn it off by holding the power button and after that switching the power off. There were some beepy noises and i got a screen asking me to select a keyboard, but my mouse and keyboard wouldnt work so I turned it off again.
Still not getting any picture but my mouse and keyboard are lit up, and the scroll lock indicator is flashing
Ok i rebooted it again and am at the choose your keyboard layout screen, still cant do anything
Fuck im gonna be really sad if i lose my files :(
And i dont have a windows 10 disc or anything, i just had it give me the free upgrade a while back
bamp
Someone pls :(
Do you still have the same problem after leaving the computer off for at least ten minutes, OP? Do it with the power unplugged for good measure.
>>253944
Alright, ill try that
Im starting to set up an installation of windows 10 on a usb
Just worried about losing all my shit
Its kinda sad how im so attached to it
>>253953
Reinstalling windows is not going to help. The problem is not in windows, and you probably can't even get to that installation.
The good news is that you won't lose your data. Whatever the problem is (I cannot tell yet), it does not seem to have anything to do with the harddisk, which stores your stuff. Worst case, you can pull your harddisk out and copy the data to a replaced/fixed computer once you fix this.
>>253956
Oh ok
But on a few fourms they were talking about being stuck at that choose a keyboard layout screen and reinstalling windows fixed it
>>253960
Wait, maybe I misunderstood. Can you post a picture of that screen? A phone camera photo will do fine.
Ok heres what i get stuck at
I get the black and grey screen u usually get on startup but no start windows normally option, just goes to this
Also, i can go to bios or whatever if i press f12 at the start, but theres something im kinda afraid of continuing on first
Ill show it to u in a sec
Btw i did unplug it for 10 mins and restart, still fucked up
And i swear its on a pattern each time i restart
Itll go to the blue screen i showed you but every other time its a black screen but my mouse and keyboard are on and the scroll lock indicator flashes
Also not getting weird beeping noises
>>253976
Okay, that rules out overheating problems.
>>253975
Right. That is a windows screen. I imagined you were looking at a BIOS screen instead; this changes matters.
Reinstalling probably IS going to help. But it will also likely wipe your data, which probably can still be recovered. So don't do that.
>Also, i can go to bios or whatever if i press f12 at the start, but theres something im kinda afraid of continuing on first
Unlikely to help anything.
Do you have multiple harddisks?
I have to run for a bit, will be back later. Don't reinstall windows.
I have no idea if i have multiple harddisks but i probably dont
Also the i think guide on reinstalling windows 10 said i could keep my files
I just have to get to the bios menu which im having trouble doing now
>>253975
It looks like there's an option called "refresh your PC" in the installer to try reparing the OS without touching your files
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2738164/windows-stuck-choose-keyboard-layout.html
Ok heres this screen i was talking about
Im not even sure if it was bios cuz i kinda mashed f2, 8 and 12 the whole time to make sure i got it
Ive pressed esc each time to be safe, kinda scared to dick around with it
>>254008
Does your keyboard still work when on that screen?
(Back for a bit.)
>>254012
Yeah i can use it
>>254017
Are your keyboard and mouse plugged into USB2 (black) or USB3 (blue) ports?
Can you try whether switching helps?
>>254027
Theyre all black
Bout to try, but i dont think itll work
Yea still no
So u sure that windows 10 reinstall will wipe my shit?
And do u know which one to select and that second pic i showed u
>>254035
>So u sure that windows 10 reinstall will wipe my shit?
No. It may work, or it may not. But I would never rely on it working for my own data.
>And do u know which one to select and that second pic i showed u
What are you trying to boot? There's no USB there.
HOLY SHIT OK IDK WHAT I DID BUT STUFF IS HAPPENING AND I CAN USE MY MOUSE
It says its workin on updates
Man good thing i didnt end up doing the reinstall of windows
>>254045
I have absolutely no idea what's going on here. But I'm glad the problem has somehow resolved itself.
There's a distinct possibility that the same problem will happen again within a week or so, if the problem was hardware related. So I suggest you back up your data as soon as you have everything working again.
Yea i logged in everything is gud
How do i backup me stuffs
Ok i think it fucked up already
Im gonna have to take it to the shop
Jeezus murphy please give me a break :(
It froze and i rebooted
So im back where i started
Fml
>>254058
Do you have any important files on your computer?
idk what could've caused this but it looks to be a software issue. I don't think a shop will be able to do anything but gouge you for reinstalling and maybe data recovery, which you can do yourself
>>254054
Looks like a hardware problem of some sort. Hard to say what part is broken.
Try downloading the memtest86+ memory testing tool, http://www.memtest.org/ ; you can boot it from a USB and let it check whether your memory is bad. If not, that's one possibility ruled out. (Running it will take a while, maybe an hour.)
If not, your local repair shop will be able to find out which part is broken. I might be able to tell, but it's hard to be sure from a distance, and I wouldn't want to tell you to replace your video card when it turns out to be the motherboard instead, or something like that.
>>254056
This definitely looks like a broken video card. Though it's hard to say for sure; run the memtest in any case, as it's an easy check.
Do you know what hardware you have, exactly? Parts list, model number, something like that?
I used to know but i could only check if i could get in
This is a prebuilt acer i got like 5 years ago
Changed the video card to an r9 270x in like 2013
I figured it was a video card thing, the way the display was all fucked up :(
>>254065
Likely the video card, yes.
Do you still have your 2013 card around? Can you swap the r9 for that thing, and see if your problems disappear?
>>254078
Yeah i think they put it in the box that my new one was in
Its like 7000 series and really poopoo so i wont be able to run shit
Im not a computer guy and ive never swapped a card myself
They also switched the power supply when they put in the 270x
I found it
>>254083
>Im not a computer guy and ive never swapped a card myself
Any muppet can do it, but look it up on YouTube first because the long slots have a clip at the back to hold the card in, so if you don't unclip it you'll break something.
>>254096
Alright, ill take care of it tomorrow
Ill do that memtest too
Is there any special installation stuff to do or do i just put the hardware in?
Also what in the video card fucks up like it did, and can it be fixed?
>>254099
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2266699/amd-vertical-lines-crash.html
it's something that AMD cards do to the motherboard is what people seem to think. My PC suffered it last week, I can't play games or do really anything that requires graphics processing without crashing with the vertical streaks
>>254083
Doesn't matter if it's a potato, the only goal is to test whether it's the r9 that's broken :)
As >>254096 says, it's pretty simple:
- unplug computer entirely
- unscrew the left side plate (as seen from the front)
- r9 video card probably has a cable going to it, unplug it
- unscrew the one or possibly two screws holding the card into place at the iron bracket (circled green)
- there's a plastic clip thingy on the motherboard holding the far end of the card in place (circled red). Pull it back, or you can't get the card out. See youtube if necessary.
- pull out the card. This takes some force. If it's stuck, check that clip from the previous step.
- put in the old-timey card the same way. Screw it in. Close the case. This one doesn't need a power cable.
>>254106
Forgot my pic.
Also:
>Also what in the video card fucks up like it did, and can it be fixed?
No idea what part is broken, but no it can't be fixed. If it is indeed the video card, buy a new video card. (Or live with your 7000)
>>254107
Alright, also I think I actually got the card in 2014, would a card like that normally breaking down at this point?
Oh yeah and whoever asked if theres anything important its all just personal stuff
like porn and stuff from /b/ that im still really attached to for some reason
I guess because ive been building it up over such a long time
Oh yea and lots of music that i spend a lot of time diggin around for and importing
Im sure itll all be fine though
>>254101
Do you have trouble booting up in the first place?
Can you still do web browsing nd watching videos?
>>254116
booting up is fine, can brows web, couldn't watch videos until I disabled hardware acceleration in crome, but even that doesn't keep it from crashing sometimes in videos and streams
>>254118
That's another strong hint of it being a video card issue.
>>254143
It's a theoretical possibility, but not a likely one. The vast majority of the time video cards do this, it's because the video card is broken. But anyway, the video card replacement test will be conclusive and settle the matter.
So does it mean its probably my video card if its all weird when i boot it up?
