I'm having a hard time figuring out how to solve this problem from the class's website...

"Lum and Ataru were hanging out at the local basketball court. While Lum was seated at the bleachers with a book at her hand, Ataru was out in the court practicing his free-throws. Lum wanted to give a shot. She flew up high and from 10 meters up in the air, dropped the ball onto the floor. On each bounce, the ball bounces to three quarters of the height of the previous bounce. Find the distance travelled by the ball before it comes to rest. The basketball rim was 3 meters high and 75 meters away. Did Lum score? If she didn't, could she have scored if she did something differently?"

This is an extremely simple question, so you're probably overthinking it.

Step 1: Draw a diagram of the setup at the moment she releases the ball.

Step 2: Draw vectors on your diagram representing the vertical and horizontal components of the force on the ball at the moment it's released.

Step 3: At this point the answer should be obvious. If it isn't, post your diagram here and we'll see where you went wrong.

Where's the horizontal component in the problem he posted? It reads as though she drops the ball straight down.

Right. That's the point.

This right. Just add "and travels 2 meter forwards" to the question and then solve it.

For extra credit

And have those 2 meters diminish by like 15% per bounce for extra fun
