It depends anon. Sometimes to make a pc fast, you need more RAMs, maybe a new processor or even a video card. I'm not a specialist on specs but when i had a shitty pc i bought around 16 GB of RAM and a new video card that today is obsolete, it worked very well.

No, I'm just curious.

Thanks.

Generally the CPU is what does calculations. If you're playing a video game, it's moreso the GPU. If it's video editing or rendering, then RAM+CPU.

This, but your hard drive can also limit read/write speed for data. And if you're working off an external device then you're limited by the speed of the connection between your machine and the storage device. And lastly, when it comes to the internet speed has almost nothing to do with your machine at all.

You'll notice the change in speed if you replace your HDD with a SSD, especially boot up speed.

This thread is full of half-truths.

The CPU does general compute. Most tasks depend on the CPU on their speed. The on-paper specs of a CPU aren't necessarily comparable to other processors, you'll have to look at benchmarks to see where differences do come in. Then there are different kinds of tasks that one cpu can do better than another while doing worse on something else.
Generally though, the amount of cores and threads is a good indication of how well a cpu can multitask or how well multithreaded software can take advantage of your processor.

The hard drive is your storage device where you store your files and software. The most important spec being storage space, how much information you can store on a device. The second is data transfer speeds, affecting how fast your drive can read or write data. This shows as delays in things like loading files, starting up software and booting up your computer.

Fuck this post length limit is retarded.

Generally an SSD will have faster transfer speeds but lower storage ang higher price per GB. A good optimization is to get both an SSD and a traditional HDD and place your software on the SSD and files on the HDD.

Next is RAM, a pool of super fast working memory that doesn't hold data if power to it is lost. You load your files and software into RAM so the CPU can work with it more effectively. RAM speeds generally only matter on tasks that don't spend most of their time waiting for user input. Also, RAM that isn't used to hold working data is generally wasted.
If you run out of RAM and need to load more data for working, your operating system will write a part of the contents of your RAM onto your storage device. This will slow down the tasks using that data, and shows up as stuttering and uneven performance in software.

Damn limit...

Then comes the GPU. The GPU is a specialized piece of hardware designed to lift the burden of graphics processing off the CPU. Dedicated GPUs are usually used by gamers and graphics professionals. Same performance rules apply here as they do with CPUs; only reliable way to tell if something really is fast is to look at benchmarks and even then different GPUs can do both better and worse than another depending on the type of task.
If you don't play games or have no other need for a GPU, you should be fine with one included on the CPU.

Then there's network speeds. Not really about the PC itself, but you could have a slow contract or use a physically limited cable limiting your speeds.

That's about it. Different pieces of hardware affect different kinds of tasks.

Determine what you need in your box by what you want to do with it.
