You can setup your private cloud with tools like own cloud. Although I personally still prefer FTP or even normal file shares over VPN / SSH tunnels. The reason is I don't like to host big Webapplications in my home network. It's just not secure enough. Something like an FTP is 80s technology and there is only so much that can go haywire and it's therefore pretty easy to keep under control.

You'd need a server to make the space accessible via internet. Not really recommended unless you're pretty savvy. I prefer to just carry it around with me and keep it synced with a couple of others for good measure.

what do you mean "cloud"? the idea behind a cloud is data storage independent from physical devices. in your case this is nonsensical since it's only ever going to be one drive. i think you're looking for a NAS (network attached storage), not a cloud. if you want to access it from the internet i would strongly recommend a VPN tunnel for safety. then you're inside your LAN and can just access the NAS.
