I'm in need of horror anime.
i just got finished with higurashi because it was recommended by multiple people here, and also topped the list on mal for horror anime.
big huge problem was that it wasn't scary. at all. it was gory at times, but not a horror anime in the least. it was more of a mystery/comedy. like a bloody Groundhog Day. and it crossed the line between telling a joke and being a joke. I'm not saying it was bad, since i liked it for what it was, but as a horror anime, it didn't work. especially with the art style of the chars turning into super deformed chibis mid-scene.
anime similar to corpse party is what I'm looking for. it had out of place humor thrown in, but it didn't go overboard. it still took itself seriously enough to be creepy.
I'm thinking about checking out "another" but i don't want it to be another higurashi.
any recommendations?
also i only have enough bandwidth to download 1 anime series a month so good recommendations are really important.

The Higurashi VN is way better than the anime.
I've seen quite a few in the horror genre but the only one that I really liked was Alien 9. Check that one out.

i think the concept itself didn't really work as a horror.
the first episode of it was great, very spooky and mysterious, but it completely shifted in atmosphere after jumping back to 1983.
I'll read up on alien 9.

Another is basically Final Destination: the Anime
it's not bad, but it's not exaclty scary either, just very gory.
Quality and Artwork are better than Higurashi though

Try Inaka Isha, based on Ein Landarzt by Franz Kaffka.
The atmosphere is great and unique, unfortunately it is only one short episode long.
Someone recommended Monster, which is mainly a crime thriller, but probably had the best brooding, negative, creepy atmosphere of all anime I've watched.

Since I just read this comment, Monster is considered one of the best written shows in any medium, there is simply no comparison to shit like Another.
But of course it might not be specifically what you are looking for since some do not consider it horror.
If you are looking for atmosphere there is also Tenshi no Tamago.
