Sitting at inlaws for holiday, trying to use the network. It keeps cycling between 2.2Mbs network speed to 0.1, and then (WAN connected) but no internet. Then recycles after 15 minutes.
How do I diagnose where in the network the problem is? ( Before I just go cycle the router, I want to learn)
Ping works fine when it's up, and then obviously can't find the host when it's down.
I have access to a win10 machine right now, and a galaxy6 phone.
Thanks for playing!
Is someone streaming Netflix? Often QoS settings favor streaming media over regular data and can cause your IP to cycle out. Also make sure your phone is only able to connect to the WiFi. Often it will drop wifi when the data stream drops for a more reliable connection (4G or another wifi).
Currently I'm the only one home, and there aren't any other devices that I know of in use.
(I can't access the router device table, bc I don't know the passcode)
This is largely happening on the laptop.
With the phone, I just disconnect wifi and use 4G to keep going

Are you on Bell? Or in the 514 area?
Chicago area. I think comcast
Ok, connection was normal. Just slowed and i did a ping that timed out with destination unreachable. Now showing no internet in icon tray.
Then tray icon says internet access, but ping times out all requests
Im assuming that because WAN stays connected, that problem is between router and ISP....?
847 area code.
Contact isp helpdesk, follow instructions. They'll troubleshoot your connection with you and they often have diagnostic tools to help figure out what the problem is if it isn't caused on your end. Might be a simple as swapping out the cable from your modem to the telephone /coax entry point or replacing/resetting the modem.
