Float on water. The legs adjust so you can compensate for magnetic North being different from true north.

>take the tip off so you can use it to write some stuff
>find 2 landmarks that you can see IRL and also in your map
>use the sun and the stars to know where the north is
>align your map's north to IRL north
>while keeping the norths aligned, align one of the landmarks IRL with the same landmark in your map with your point of view
>now draw a straight line across all the map in that direction
>jump to the end of step 4, then repeat 5 and 6 for the other landmark
>you are where both lines cross each other

Not only you know your orientation, you also know exactly where you are and how far away from other stuff.
