Which is best for a computer that might already be infected with malware? Should I download a portable malware scanner or use an "online scanner?" I'm not looking to actually install anything. Any brand recommendations?

Avast antivirus is pretty dope. DO NOT unse an online one. i mean shit dog havent you seen black mirror?
>>
How portable are we talking about? The anti-malware software I normally use also check for updates before scanning.

No I haven't seen that, what exactly are you implying? I've been using the Eset online scanner, it gets decent reviews and yields okay results... what exactly is the risk for online scanners?

Well I would assume as long as I download the newest version of a portable scanner like say Comodo Cleaning Essentials or something similar it comes with the newest updates. I have a windows 8 tablet I never use and a double sided flash drive (has both regular usb and micro-usb male ends) so i would update the flash drive with the newest version before using it on the desktop PC I intend to run the scan on.

I've seen all the Black Mirror up to the last episode of season 3, but I'm still missing the reference.

When someone asks me to help them with their PC, I usually bring a USB key with the software the article below links to:

So far it's done the job, including ransomware and rootkits.
