It's pretty, and it can be fun sometimes.
Out of all battle academy harem shows, it's perhaps the one focusing mostly on being comedic instead of having sexy fanservice.

But all in all, I would agree with the others that it's average.

This is probably the highlight of the entire show. It's in episode 1.

The first 6 episodes can get boring (episode 4 is very nice though), but episode 7 onwards is very good. Episodes 11, 12, and 13 are specially great. You have to consider that it's episodic and that there's not supposed to be an overarching plot. Still, the finale is great and gives satisfying closure.

People who complain the loudest are KyoAni fans who have standards much different from normal people. It's pretty substandard for KyoAni and is really just a painfully mediocre light novel adaptation. I wouldn't call it bad, just forgettable.

How is that really different from other shows of its genre?

Last year's battle harem shows like Anti-Magic, Asterisk S1 and Rakudai bundled 6 volumes each, and the other battle harem shows that Phantom World aired along with like Hundred and Undefeated Bahamut also had 6 volumes.

It's your typical 2 episodes per volume package.
The only difference is that Phantom World has 13 episodes instead of 12. Kyoto Animation tends to do that to pack an extra original video animation episode to sell more volumes total.

Anyway, back to the original topic of this thread, which I will presume is about asking if Phantom World can be recommended to watch or not, since it's on /wsr/.

My advice is, yes, it can be watched. It's an okay time-waster.
