Unless you can give an example an anime that does symbolism better, or an example that lain does it badly and tries to cover it up then you're just using a contrarian buzzword to conceal your subjective bias against the genre.

Boogiepop Phantom and FLCL are similar. The genre is referred to as dementia, I think.
