Imagine every square is the length "1" (unit length).
The amount of area in the big white circle is then
= (3 * 3 * pi)/2 - the three small half circles
= (9*pi)/2 - 1.5 * (1/4 * pi)
All of the three black circles together are
= 3 * (1/4*pi)
Now divide one by the other to get the ratio.

Not saying your answer is wrong but I don't get specifically that part of the equation.

Because the black portion you need to subtract from the big white circle is
= "one and a half black circles"
= 1.5 * (1/2 * 1/2 * pi)
= 1.5 * (1/4 * pi)
