Do you already have a DDR3 and a DDR4 system around?
There are a few games which benefit from having 16gb over 8gb. But I wouldn't buy a DDR3 system new if I were you just to use old value RAM.

Anon, there aren't many motherboards that work with both versions so check which version works on your motherboard, best option here would be to just get 2x 8GB DDR4 instead of DDR3.
I'm using 2x 8GB Kingstone Fury HyperX DDR4 and it works great.

OP, just try sticking them both in your motherboard and see which one fits.

Well as a guy who last night tried to play the witcher 3 with a PC sporting 8gb of ram and had it immediately shutdown on me due to not having enough RAM I would say the safe bet is a 16GB kit, problem is that you have a kit of DDR3 and DDR4 and pretty much no motherboard supports both, so get a 16 GB kit thats compatible with your PC.

Bullshit, I used to have only 8GB ram when Witcher 3 came out and it worked fine, however it's good to have at least 16GB of RAM nowadays if you're going to play video games since new games usually recommend you have that much.

OP, could you finally tell us if you have DDR3 or DDR4? No one can really help you with RAM if we don't know which one you have.
However no matter which one you have you should get at least 16GB.
