Not anon, but Photoshop has some tools which replace whatever you select with what seems like it should fit in that spot. Its pretty easy to use.

I'm that anon. I mainly used GIMP's repair tool. You select an area pattern, and the tool will remove things which "disturb" this pattern.
For cleanup and the fuzzy areas I mainly used the clone-tool anon described.
I recommend playing arround with the occupancy around 50-75% to make it blend properly after a first rough 100% pass until it looks right.
