That's what you multiply everything by in order to get y. 4/-1 times -1/4 is 1.

You're isolating variable *y*, which in your problem has been multiplied by the constant -1/4. Well isolating a variable multiplied by anything is easy, simply take the reciprocal of that constant.

Hence -(1/4)^-1 = -(4/1) [plus/negative signs are preserved]. Multiply by both sides, and you get y.
