Half my phone's storage is being taken up by "other" and I don't know what it is. I can't download vital apps because of it and want it gone.
Anybody know this problem?

Operating system, default apps storage, data cache, and other shit like that.
You can back your data up and do a factory reset to see how much space you can recover. If you have a lot of space tied up in default apps, you're probably going to need to root the phone to get rid of them.

i just wrote down contacts and backed up files that i needed to my computer and factory reset the phone.
It's this a fucking joke. I'm posting from a factory reset phone.

Yeah OS isn't small, plus usually will reserve some extra space for updates. And if there are any default apps that get loaded on, those are taking up space there too.
Might think about getting a new phone if you don't have an SD card slot and need more storage.

I'm pretty sure that if you click "other" it should tell you which folders are using up the storage.
