Figured I'd ask here, does anyone know any good free video converters? I'm trying to convert a .mkv file to .avi so I can upload it to Youtube but I don't really know of any good ones. I tried Freemake but with their forced splash screen crap and the end result having terrible video quality I want to use something else.

mkv is not a codec, you don't convert it. It's a container for video/audio.
Get mkvtoolnix / mkvextractgui2. Then figure out if you need to convert.
I've been using Format Factory for quite a while now.
It converts the most popular formats of audio, video, and pictures; and just now I noticed that it even added webm support.
It's pretty easy to understand and it is add-free.
