Well, it kinda does, because N, AC, etc. introduced the idea of MIMO routing, and to get the best throughput your card needs to have as many channels as your AP, and a fast enough connection to the backplane.
A USB 2.0 2x2:2 802.11n card isn't going to deliver your 4-stream 802.11ac router's gigabit, because USB2 isn't fast enough, and the card has nowhere near enough antennae.
