This is my first pc build, and I'm confused. On the hard drive, there are three slots. One is the power supply, and there are two others. The center one can be attached to the mother board using a red sata cable. What goes in the third slot?

Nothing, it's an archaic slot used to designate masters and slaves but it isn't needed anymore.
