Hi.

I'm requesting, asking for recommendations for some anime that are serious and solemn (so no comedies!). The best anime I've ever seen is Monster, and it seems like there are VERY few animes like it, in terms of visually "un-exaggerated" character designs, constant suspense, intelligent writing/ story; it feels kind of "real", like it's a live action suspense thriller that just happened to be hand-drawn. I'm not really a fan of animes where 90 % (arbitrary amount) are teenagers, and where there's a bunch of physically overpowered characters.

So I guess I'd like to get some recommendations on mystery, thriller, drama animes. I quite enjoy crime dramas, but I'm not sure there are that many excellent crime animes (perhaps you know of some?).

My favorite tv show is probably True Detective (season 1)

One of my all time favorite movies is Zodiac.

My favorite TV mini-series is a Swedish one called "Lasermannen" (which a friend of mine created English subs for). It was INCREDIBLY well made... yet appears to be near completely unknown outside of Sweden (as well as Denmark/ Norway I'm guessing).

I've seen it, thought it was solid but it felt a bit too action oriented.

I'll of course appreciate recommendations on animes that aren't necessarily Drama/ Mystery/ Crime/ Thriller all packed in one, as long as it isn't parody/ comedy/ explicitly and intentionally downright pornography. As far as ratings go I suppose an R rating might be due for the recommended animes.

Seen that one, quite liked it, despite it being a bit "hard to get" so to speak.

I can mention that thought Perfect Blue was really good.

Monster was incredible. Their portrayal of 1990s Germany was so on point that it felt weird not hearing them speak German.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes should fit the bill. It is scifi, yes, but the characters all act like real (grown up) people. Basically the Greek Sagas of Anime.
A bit hard to get into though, since it's not pretty and contains shitloads of complicated characters and politics.

Serial experiments Lai, even though the main character is a schoolgirl, might also be your thing.
Maybe even the nihilistic "Texhnolyze".
Mushishi
Tenshi no Tamago (movie)

Everything by Satoshi Kon
And if you're into serious melancholy, everything by Makoto Shinkai.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It's a space opera, but also one of the most grounded political and war epics anime has ever produced. The cast of characters is large, but they are still engaging and complicated people. A lot of the story is dense political intrigue, rather than just space battles, though there are still quite a few of those. The conflicts in the story vary greatly in scope though, some of the most tense moments are not in the huge battles with tens of thousands of ships and millions of soldiers, but just a handful of people you care about being pursued by a secret police force, or infiltrating a dangerous cult, or trying to escape a trap set by enemy ground forces. Sometimes the conflict of an episode is nothing more than a rivalry or disagreement between peers. It's a fantastic show.

Thank you so much! I did indeed like Millenium Acress, Paprika, and Tokyo Godfathers!

I'll try to check out the ones you mentioned!

Indeed, it was outstanding...

I have heard A LOT of good things about LoTGH, I'll definitely check it out. Serial Experiments Lain had a pleasant atmosphere (disturbing, but it pleased my senses). I'll try to check out Texhnolyze, it seems interesting. Mushishi seems quite interesting, but I'm wondering if the slow pace might put me off... I've really heard a lot of good stuff stuff about, or rather, many people seem to like it very much. I've seen Voices of a Distant Star and 5 Centimeters Per Second, and I liked them despite them not being the "typical" animes I like.

It seems truly epic, I'm intrigued!

I found out about a show called "Master Keaton", created by the man behind "Monster". I watched the first two episodes, and I like it (although perhaps not as much as I did Monster two episodes in).
>>
I can also dream that "Pluto" and "20th Century Boys" get their (Madhouse created/ produced) animes as well...
>>
You might like Mouryou no Hako.

I've heard about that one. It's fantasy or something, right? Still, I hear it's quite interesting.

It's not really a fantasy. It's a mystery. Near the end it gets slightly more unrealistic, but that's a huge spoiler. The first episode isn't the best because of the it's from the victims' point of view, so a few events are told from an impressionable teenage girl's point of view but other than the one big spoiler near the end it's fairly grounded in reality other than a slight horror lean.

I'll check it out, thank you!
