I remember a teacher I had told me she was accused of deleting a students essay (turned in via email) so she got someone to check her deleted emails to prove her innocence.

They actually have support. I don't remember the link but I sent a request and they replied telling me it was not possible. Some people say they recovered it but who knows. I'm not sure about Google's criteria.

I get the feeling OP doesn't understand how gmail works. The email resides on google servers, and only on google servers. When you use a device like an android smart phone or a web browser, or a thirst party mail client like outlook (which uses imap and doesn't download locally) to view your mail, it is only ever able to do so by viewing what google has remotely on their server.

You could potentially have cached email on a smart phone, but the moment the phone syncronizes with google servers, the email is as good as gone anyway.

If google is telling you the email is gone for good on their servers, then that means they can no longer retrieve it or have no desire to go looking through massive amounts of backups they have of millions of users to find your email. The longer out it is from the deletion date, the most likely it is gone forever and ever.

When you say your teacher in this example, I believe this is most likely the school or university or whereever is using a mail server of their own which many do, and local IT people can fish through backups and also just by easily checking the deleted items folder assuming it was never trashed or deleted. Gmail is different.
