i tried updating my xbox one controller using a micro usb cable that was laying around but the xbone said i needed to use a different cable. i grabbed the cable for my tablet and it worked, but why? are micro usbs created equal?

No.

Loads of them are crappily made of crappy wires that don't support USB2 data rates without errors up the wazoo. Some of them even have such crappy power wires that they slow your charging.

The button mapping, acceleration, etc. etc. is done inside the pad. There's a computer that does this, and it can get firmware updates.

The controller itself can update stuff you plug into it, like the chatpad.
