I'm no tech expert, but with internet access I figured I could solve any problem. Early this morning, my Google Nexus 5 came on and was stuck on the Google logo screen on startup. It would not advance past this screen, no matter how long I waited. A little while ago, I got to looking online for solutions, and the common solution seems to be factory reset, followed by it working. For me, that is not the case; even after factory reset, it still stays on the logo. I've found some other guides online that may help me get around this, but like I said, I'm no computer expert, so the technobabble just has me confused. Is there any way someone could give me instructions on fixing my phone in layman's terms? Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Also, if I should provide more info let me know. I'll do what I can.
I don't know which Nexus 5 you have, but you need to flash a new rom, because your software is broken that's why it doesn't boot up.

The only issue with that is that the factory image I'm attempting to flash just says "waiting for device" even though I've got it plugged in and in fastboot mode. Not sure how to get around this now.

I struggled a bit with a Mozilla Flame, I suppose your udev rules are ok but they're worth giving it a look. Then replug it and mount it?
PS: according to the B2G wiki you probably haven't set udev rules for fastboot, which are not the same as the adb ones.
Run lsusb to get your Nexus' IDVENDOR, then add the following line to /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="18d1", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"
