I think it's less that he's selfish and more about the fact that his force of personality is just so overpowering that other people can't help but be drawn into his life and just do whatever he wants.

For him, it means that he's absolutely unable to have a meaningful relationship with someone, because he simply, and without any intention of doing so, twists them into a puppet to his whims. When it really comes down to it, Rick wants to be loved as an equal, same as anyone else does, but he's so isolated from the world that's something he can't manage.

In the entire universe, he is completely alone, and he can't seem to help but destroy everything he loves, no matter how hard he tries.

Jerry is weird. He started out sort of sympathetic, but now he's a boring, cowardly jackass with almost no sympathetic qualities, other than loving most of his family.

When he got shot like a million times in the Herzog episode, I actually felt a sense of hope, that they were going to finally kill him off. They could have gotten some good character development out of the rest of the cast, particularly Rick and Beth, if they had done so. I was legitimately upset when he survived.

Jerry jokes from day 1 boiled down to "ha, look at how pathetic this guy is". It was hilarious at first, and they would be funny if they were spaced out a little more, but that's all that happens when he's on screen. There aren't really any sympathetic moments with Jerry, when he's not being spineless he's being greedy or just screwing over his family.
