Have you ever played a Bethesda game?

Basically it is open. Very open. The appeal is really just that you can make your own story up, using their setting and engine. Main story is often even unnecessary. The last Bethesda game, Skyrim, was so open that I had six well travelled characters, all wildly different, and only one ever "completed" the game's main storyline. 2 of them barely even started it.

Fallout 4 FEELS slightly smaller than Skyrim, but has great mechanical improvements, such as the fully constructable settlements, and really nice weapon crafting system.
Common complaints about it lately have been massively overblown things, often perpetuated by a very vocal minority, often who have not in fact played the game.

Kind of true. For the first time, the protag has a voice, which is kind of lame, and the dialogue options are always 4, done in a shitty radial menu. There is already a mod to fix this though.

These people have obviously not played the game. Yes, you meet the dog immediately at the start. But then you can tell it to piss off and never see it again. There is even a perk that allows you to have increased carry weight and damage resistance for NOT having a follower.

I have questions for those of you who actually played the game...
I was playing on my tremendously shitty computer with all the graphics settings on minimum and an incredible fps rate of 2 seconds per frame. You read that right.
Needless to say I couldn't take it for much long before I finally gave up and accepted the harsh true that I'm too poor for the 8th generation
Now regarding the main quest, I got to the point where we have to go to the glowing sea for the first time looking for that doctor there, Argil, Avril or something.
Out of curiosity I read about the rest of the main storyline but I couldn't understand... Kellogg kidnaps baby shaun and takes it to diamond city where he lives with shaun for some time, until shaun is taken away. How can Shaun be 60 years old now, kellogs is not that old, everybody in diamond city remember the man with the kid living living there, even that doctor who makes that operation to put kellogg's brain processor inside valentine mind said "This was a very recent memory". If kid shaun was replaced for a kid synth, who really kidnapped the real shaun in 2200? Is the baby kellog kidnaps the real shaun or a synth replacement? If it's the real shaun, hows that possible in the time line? Kellogg would have to be more than 80 years old by now, and he's clearly a young adult. And why the institute wants shaun in the first place?
Unlike all of you I was playing solely for the story cause I'm a plebeian fan of fallout since 2008 and I didn't want to be left out, at least not in the main quest storyline.
In addition: Can we date and marry in fallout like we can in skyrim? If yes, can you date other men? I like my characters gay.

And wvery single one was that moment when you realize some fuckstick raider has a mini-nuke, and you are just praying to the dicegods for VATS to let you shoot it out of the air, even though you took no VATS perks.
