Sometimes i see anons crying and saying something about old 4chan, good times, 4chan is dead, stuff like that. There is someone ancient enough to explain me how was 4chan back in his golden glory days?

There were no glory days. The earliest events of I remember about /b/ was 4chan getting hacked, then the Kimmo spam because he was trying to get people to go to his site. He was a pedo and wanted to do a linkshare with m00t. m00t told him to fuck off so he spammed /b/ with links to his site.

Then there was also the red square spam that took over /b/. That was actually pretty fucking funny, because people would actually download the fuckers and follow the directions and wind up spamming /b/ with them.

I remember when Boxxy was brought over. Fucking hell, /b/ tore itself apart and the battle lines are still drawn in the sand over it.

4chan was hacked one time and the site was replaced with this forum. It was orange, blue and silver themed and loaded with spam.

People had their fun on /b/ - Habbo raids, the war between /b/ and /gif/ and then /r9k/. Cancer was still there, but it wasn't as prevalent because the age/maturity gap was pretty close. Now, you have people who are in 20's and still acting like they're in high school. But above all else, /b/ has been, is and will always be shit.

There was no SJW bullshit and consequently no /pol/ faggots. 4chan was for adults to act like 14 year old retards and shitpost about anime. Boards had relatively small communities, /v/ in particular was immeasurably insular; anyone remember Toxic Jester? He was a tripfag who could literally halt a thread dead just by posting in it, people basically hated him because a large enough group of people recognized him, it was amazing.

/b/ didn't have dick measuring threads, facebook creep threads, non of that faggot-fueled adolescent bullshit. /b/ was a mind numbing stream of contradictory content like no other. generally when people post about the bad old days they're talking about when the site was relatively smaller and the userbase more clearly spread out between underageb& underachievers and adult supernerds with lots of potential and zilch for motivation. I'm not an oldfag, I only started posting in 2006 or 2007, but the year or two I enjoyed 4chan before more chuckle fucks like me showed up was a real golden age.

The true oldfags were fucking incredible, so irascible, so dissatisfied with everything they could form an opinion about. they were magnificent, hateful bastards who loathed everything equally. it's hard to explain, especially because it's been so long, but only boards like /tg/ and /g/ with their permanent neckbeard aficionados really resemble what it was like.

Most of the newfags these days are just pathetic people. Too inexperienced to offer any real perspective and too sociopathic to actually feel anything positive. The alcoholic, miserable progenitors have been replaced by legions of opiate-abusing numbbrains who fill in the margins of human society and genuinely believe the retarded shit that gets posted here. Fuck em all.

I guess as an original fag I'd say you have to look for the good times. Most people go to /r/ and complain when they are in threads they don't want to be in, as opposed to those who find a thread they enjoy and take part in.

>>Why are there so many cocks in a gay thread!? You're all fags...

Well the thread is for fags... Apposed to that, you can also flame any thread that makes you happy to. So it is a double edged blade to complain about how shitty 4chan is, you make it shitty by saying it's shitty.

All-in-all remember, one of the first refined gently conversations on here was about loli/cheeze. Just takes the right person to start the thread and the right contriboots to keep it going.
>>
>>806835
4chan used to keep normal people away with its' reputation as the asshole of the internet; it was a hive of scum an villainy, the Mos Eisley of the internet.
Add to that the fact that the internet wasn't nearly as heavily used compared to today. Presently, grandma has a facebook page, but back then 'macros' and 'scripts' were words you could befuddle common-folk with.

So old 4chan was a niche community within a niche community.
New 4chan has fucking preteens shitting up threads because it got too popular for its own good.

I'd say the biggest difference from that period to know is lurking actually existing.

Nobody ever lurks anymore, hell a lot of people don't even understand what it means, this causes the quality to decline incredibly fast, as not only do newcomers screw up with it, but they also make it look as something that is not a problem, since many do it.

I'd say there is also a problem in how moderation works, the fact that you can barely comment on the state of the website + not being able to call out people on rule breaking means that many, MANY people don't report at all, and at some point the shit overcomes the reports and then there is no turning back, the community is not going to fix it and the moderation team isn't either.

Example: the current state of /v/

That's one of the biggest differences in my opinion. I've been on here since the beginning, and back then it was, for lack of better words, a community of like-minded people. We hated everything and everyone, but we were all relatively similar and could relate to each other. Like someone else in the thread said, it was a niche community within a niche community. But then as pseudo-nerds went mainstream and we started getting more and more "normal" people showing up, it totally changed the character of the boards. Nobody lurks anymore, nobody jumps down their throats for not lurking, poor spelling and grammar are tolerated, the site is full of edgy lolrandom underage b&, etc.
>>
>>808032
People post emoticons not to rile people up, but because they think it's okay

I think that says it all about the decline in quality
>>
>>808032
>poor spelling and grammar are tolerate
the fuck are you talking about? people didn't give a shit about spelling and grammar because everyone knew it was just a fucking image board.

The spelling and grammar anal hurt came with the normies. Mainly right after it got really popular after chanology.

You are a fucking faggot if you look at posts for anything other than the meaning behind them.
>>
>>808004
Good lord, source?
>>
>>808064
No. People would post unintelligible gibberish trying to be funny, but the lazy AOLspeak bullshit was never tolerated. The perception that it came with the normies is because that's when terrible spelling and grammar became enough of a problem for people to say something about it.

Another important factor in old 4chan is that it was before "memes" went mainstream.

I remember the first time I went on 4chan it was like people were *literally* speaking a different fucking language, and if you didn't correctly use any of the pastas or little wordflips or whatever a minimum of 5 people would call you a newfag and tell you to lurk more.

The thing is, you actually *did* have to lurk more before you could post nearly anything without getting completely shit on by every reply. The community was very proudly self-enforcing, and even the sorts of opinions you expressed in a post were very telling of whether you or not you belonged.

This might sound gay, but it was very exciting to finally learn what things meant, because it finally meant you had lurked enough. It honestly took about 6 months of lurking before I felt confident enough to begin posting regularly.

Now any chuckelfuck can come in from fucking know your meme and post some bullshit and no one will say anything. That right there is, I think, the biggest difference

>>

Not him but /b/ was always shit, the other boards were actually fine, though not immune to waves of shittiness.
Now the entire site is complete shit since people from tumblr, reddit, 9gag, facebook, etc came in and stayed, thinking this is a place where you're suppose to shitpost and act like a massive fucking retard faggot, or in other words that all of 4chan != /b/.
Went to this state like around 2009 or so, only gotten worse.

>>
>>812767
While you're certainly right, that /b/ was never a place to be called "good", it wasn't always as shitty as it is now. When i first visited 4chan it blew my mind, that there were people out there who would spam NIGGER for 10 pages or post cp to get a thread, they disliked, deleted. That was edgy back then. Because jokes about women and minorities were basically just that - jokes. It wasn't just an even more retarded version of /pol/. And most of all it was random.
Now it's just nigger/sjw/trap/atheism - 24/7. And ironically what gets spammed are the ylyl threads, because they are apparently killing /b/...
Yes, it was never good - but it was definitely better.
>>
>>813059
>jokes

"just for the lulz" or how they say
>>
basically it was a group of "weebs" as you would call them today and they were all just having fun with memes in a time where you were still allowed to do that because there were no "burnt out" memes and all content was basically exclusive to us (which I'm not 100% convinced of)

the difference is that with the huge popularity boost, lots of "normies" now visit this site regularly and post on it aswell as there being other sites of similar fashion white-washing the content we used to like

no, this is not a case of blind nostalgia, it's merely a direct consequence of when things become popular and persist for a while, content *does* get diminishing returns

That was WAY past the glory days.
Fuck man, that was like 2008-9 or some shit.

2003-2005 were the "glory days".
And they were immensely better than anything that came after 2005.

Shitposting was minimal.
Samefaggotry was minimal.
Anonymous Discussion as concept was HATED.
Most people used trips and there were no stupid shitty arguments.
The concept of self-moderation never existed (and is fucking stupid and abused by any board that thinks they can self-moderate, see /a/utistis)
The mods actually moderated things. We actually liked the mods.
The mods actually done fun things with us and actually interacted with the fucking site.
What is considered "autism", aka people being overly anal as fuck, was common on all boards. "Nazi-ism" (as in being anal over shit) was the law of the land.
Emoticons were used. A lot. Even XD. But mostly ;_;. Life-like texture ;_;
As were things like lol, lmao, rofl, roflmao and everything else under the sun.
Boards moved slowly, allowing people to actually think and take time to make Quality Content. Fast boards fucking blow.
People actually lurked and rarely posted unless they had something of worth.
People actually knew how to use sage properly.
Sagebombing, dubscancer and other self-moderation techniques never existed. (until desuspam later on)

But the biggest difference? People actually got on.
Pretty much half the site actually knew each other in real life, or outside of the site on forums, IRC and such. They knew what made each other laugh, so there was less shit content in general.
This website is filled with people that don't even watch anime now, when it was its sole purpose when it was created.
All of those boards in the large bracket at the top is literally the "off-topic" category of a forum. The rest were meant for Japanese content.

Most of 4chan today would HATE the glory days, and rightfully so.
You're all fucking faggots, go away. Off my lawn.
>>
>>808103
Literally every old screencap of 4chan says you are fucking wrong.
IRC and IM-speak was VERY common in the first 3 years. Fuck, the first 6 years.

>>808599
Yes. Then all of these shit wikis came about, like ED, ED, a site filled with people that never lurked and made shit up.
ED is the definition of what went wrong with this site, it became filled with shit people like that.

We even had our own wiki, lurkmore, and everything was fine, but fucking ED man. It was a whole level of cancerous. The ED generation is what killed this site. Everything after was just progressive levels of shittier and shittier.
Luckily most of those faggots stuck to /b/ because it was SO EPIC, ROFL POOLS CLOSED. The other boards managed to stay fine till around 2009-2010 period before the site exploded in popularity with normals for god knows what fucking reason.
Most people of worth left the site after 2010. Made their own communities or imageboards, many of which are still around now.
The older pre-forced-anonymous exodus sites that got started by people are mostly dead now.
RIP SovietRussia, the largest of the sites that remained like old 4chan to 2013.
SAOVQ is barely hanging on.

>>813059
>>812767
The thing that was good about /b/ in the early days is it was the place all the other boards came to in order to be retarded, when waiting for replies on other boards.
And the mods and moot actually had fun with the board.
All the funny events that happened, like when the board style got changed, music embeds, hidden boards, the actual emoticons like hardgay, /5/ and so on. (RIP /z/)

After Forced Anon happened, /b/ and anonymous went from being a green-headed faggot joke to a fucking movement and discussion method that nobody on the site gave a single fuck about. Thanks shii, you weeb fuck. Cunt should have stayed on world2ch. Hope he's dead.

But after Forced Anon, nobody gave a shit and all the viciously "patriotic" Yotsubites left this place.

Oh, yeah, 4chan even had a super secret name for its posters. Yotsubites. There is like, 7 people I know of on this site that legit know that phrase still.
You can even find some of the old discussions of that on the text boards if you google it.

It's easy to get nostalgic but i think things are probably better now in many ways.
If you could go back in time you'd probably cringe at much of the humour, what would be called reddit-tier now was sort of the norm here before reddit was even a notable thing.
>>
>>813452
this has happened a bunch of times between 2008-2010
the color square spam was 2009
>>
>>814137
If I went back to 2007 the only thing that would make me cringe is Spider-man selling his marriage to notSatan to save his 150 year old aunt who's dying due to a gunshot wound that no divine being, magician, mutant, super-scientist, or actual fucking doctor could deal with
>>
4chan today is garbage
It's glory days back when I was a teenager
All the stupid shit we did back then was clever and amusing
The stupid shit they do nowadays is just incomprehensible garbage
Music was better before it became about the money, no before this rock and roll noise, no back when they first used electronic synthesizers, before everything was a boyband
Dams kids, get off my lawn. Back in my day we had respect for our elders

All I remember from my early days of lurking /b/ is that our "memes" were the shit before reddit and normies touched them.

>and more that escape me at the moment

I still maintain that the old memes are better than the memes we have nowadays. Reddit and the popularity of internet culture (memes) has convinced me that memes, although fun at first, were a mistake

I forget what the quote is exactly, so I'll paraphrase:

Any group that acts like fools will eventually attract real fools who believe themselves to be in good company.

I feel like 4chan started its decline in the late 00s. I came here in 07 so I was a little late to the party, but I stuck to /b/ for about a year before lurking other boards.

/v/ is fucking horrible board now and /a/ is the only one that is still clinging to life out of the old ones I frequented. It is still dying though. I can see where older posters are trying to preserve what it used to be, but they are overwhelmed by awful newfags from elsewhere.

The only boards that resemble old 4chan are the really small ones like /ck/ and (well until not too long ago) /tg/.

It's fucking depressing and I wish there was an alternative, but it's just the end of an era. I'll still be here, but I don't enjoy it anymore. There are a couple of other small boards for discussing stuff, but it just won't be the same.

>>
>>822439
Probably. The really niche boards are still pretty intact. It's just a shame. /tg/ was a lot of fun, but because of the screencapped /tg/ stories, it has gotten progressively worse.

/pol/ and the fappening really started a decline of this place too. Stormfags are fucking horrible and shit up all the other boards.

/a/ used to be a bastion of hope, but now it's just overrun with newfags. It's terrible. Naruto threads don't get spammed because you'll get banned. Rec threads are frequent. Generals are allowed now. The only saving grace now is manga threads because newfags don't like reading.

It's nowhere near as bad as /v/ though. /v/ is a husk of its former self. I thought when the fuckers who started all that gamergate nonsense left for the other chan it would improve, but it's just as bad now.

It wasn't taken as seriously as it is now. I arrived late in 2006. This place was absolutely nuts and lacked any sort of constraints, and was simply filled with people who would launch off into tirades over anything. The place was still pretty great up to 2011. It started to slide off into shit around 2009 and never quite stopped.

Now its full of feels and adolescent shit.

Thats the thing about volvo's, instead of breaking upon impact, the g-force dosnt go through the steel components, but actually surge through your body. which is why in newer cars when you hit a tree of lets say 30 kilometers an hour, the car will be totalled as in bending certain steel bars (im no engineer) for your safety, drive safe, Dont drive a volvo.
>>
>>827879
My uncle drove a Volvo, he got hit head on, he got banged up but he survived
the police said that if he had been driving any other car he would of died
the other driver did
>>
>>827896
Thats both right and wrong, if your uncle had been driving a NEW car from a later time of which im guessing this accident happened in, he would have less of an injury, but if you have to choose between an old car, and an old volvo, stick with the volvo. that way you only murdered someone, which is better than dieing i guess

people start checking if record player is broken
they realize it's 2015 and music comes out of tiny ass gadgets
music goes on, nothing can stop it
everybody is tripping balls because of mindfuck music
the message kicks in - bustin makes him feel good
song ends. Empty glazes everywhere. Freaky ghost baby...
next song starts.
that's it. Nothing much happened. You will be dissapointed

Less trolls, less social justice shite, less edgelords.

Lots more special interests and shared fanboy stuff.

4chan is very unpleasant nowadays.

If anything ruined 4chan it's the advancement of technology and it's acceptance by normies. If the internet never grew beyond 2006 then this would still be an amazing place. I actually think the whole world would be a better place without the last 10 years of "advancement", that's probably just the old in me speaking though. I'm almost 29 now and they were right, I'll be here forever.

was active on 4chan circa 2006-2009, im still a teenager otaku back then, only active on /a/ and sometime going full retard on /b/. they did some awesome/horrible shit like rickroll ragecomic, troll science, lord inglip and LOTSA CP, #cut4bieber and rigging a poll for justin biber next tour to Best Korea. they even did a vigilante justice like sending 1000$ worth of pizzas to a cyber bully.

go to college and become too busy for 4chan, in addition that my college public wifi blocks 4chan, and will disconnect anyone who use non-standard DNS to the point that i completely forgot about 4chan existence

>fast forward 2014
so many leftist bullshit in socmed enraged me, this so called tumblrina and SJWs ironically are the one who brings me back to 4chan....

but then,

>visit /a/
they were now a bunch of non-creative autists that are obsessed with exclusivity and this self degrading shit like WAIFUs, the /a/ that i know, made lots of AMVs, self drawn anime chara, and other shit that takes a lot of efforts

>visit /b/
none other than porn, REKT ,and YLYL

and that is how i become a /pol/ regular... because fuck those tumblr feminists

By definition you can never be in the golden age. Old 4chan was never good, it's just the nostalgia of it.

I never read threads back in the day, I just came for the OC. And like most fags from back then, I posted it to some other forum and acted cool for being up on the newest content. It wasn't until '08 that I started to contribute. Now this is the only site I interact with.

I don't know about the rest, but /b/ certainly wasn't the shit it is now. It was less repetitive, less pleb, less teenager, less leeches. There was more madness, more crazy, more creative, more wtf. And there was pizza.

No fair. The engine in the 59' Bel Air was removed but not in that 2009 crapbucket. The outcome would be still devastating and fatal but if you make the "old vs new" test, make it atleast on the same spectrum.

That's definitely true, but I'm not sure that's a sign of being good. Also we were younger so i'ts hard to look back at that time subjectively

I guess my point is; 4chan now and 4chan then have one thing in common, OC.

The wikification of the Internet was the beginning of the end. The spread of social media hastened the decline: instead of people having to create and define their own online spaces, they were provided with it by services like LiveJournal, which also functioned as echo chambers for individual users. The whole "Web 2.0" process slowly bled the creative drive out of online life.

seconded. 4chan nostalgia = high school/college nostalgia. To that point - was in HS 04-08 and people were bitching about cancer back then.

"internet wierdness" and "internet culture" became mainstream culture, that's all that happened. It was bound to happen.

People talk in real life, and too many people were growing up and going into the real world (jobs and shit) after spending their shitty adolesence/stoned college days lurking on 4chan while alt+tabbing out of [insert video game here]. At some point the crossover was going to happen. People that didn't see it coming or resent it were just too caught up in their own nonsense. Living in their own bubble.

I mean shit, ESPN broadcasted an esports game. Think about that.

If y'all want to lament anything, it should be the commercialization of "the internet" on a macro level. the post social media shit. 4chan's story is just that of the internet.

Users went from having avatars and 30 different hotmail burner accounts for 30 different forums to having an all in one identity directly tied to your real ID

>There were no SJWs
Bullshit. 4chan used to be solidly left-leaning. It all started turning around when the fedora meme emerged.
>>
>>843178
or at the least 4chan users didn't automatically dismiss any left-leaning opinion as "SJW bullshit".

The bush/blair years probably promoted more lefty opinions though.
>>
>>828465
