One of my favorite webms that I've made.

The sound of four Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 afterburning turbojets heaving the Concorde skyward.

While high-bypass turbofan engines are more efficient in the subsonic range, they are limited to non-compressible flow. Turbojets, however, get more efficient as the speed increases. Through specially designed intakes, the air trades velocity for pressure, using shock waves to both slow the air down and increase it's pressure. This increases the compression ratio, assisting the compressor section similar to how a turbocharger or supercharger assists a normally-aspirated piston engine. This, combined with divergent exhaust nozzles (which increases exhaust gas velocity), makes for an engineering masterpiece of an engine. At slow speeds it uses an afterburner to assist with takeoff, initial, and final acceleration phases of flight, which can be quite loud.

To those of us who love the sound of a jet engine, it is music.
