My understanding was they were digging up Medieval cemeteries to make room. There wouldn't be anything left to visit but bones and likely people wouldn't know who was apart of their family especially when many of the graves were unmarked or had no indication of who was buried.

They are as authentic as any other catacombs. Catacombs are just subterranean burial chambers or an underground cemetery by definition. Perhaps the Paris Catacombs weren't the original place of burial and were once mines but they are still catacombs.

No, the specific qualifier authentic added to catacomb was what disqualified them since the definition of catacomb was slightly altered to include Paris being that those structures were very similar to catacombs and coming up with new words is annoying and redundant.
