A perfectly good aircraft accruing tens of thousands of dollars in repair/maintenance.

There was no mechanical failure involved in this incident. This is a perfect example of what is known as 'sensory fatigue'.

Sensory fatigue is when an individual becomes so accustomed to a certain stimulus that it is completely toned out and filtered by the brain. There is a loud beeping alarm throughout the entire final approach and flare, and even an amber caution light flashing on the annunciator panel. Although it varies between aircraft manufacturers and models, typically the gear warning alarm/horn will sound when the power lever(s) is below a certain threshold, the flaps are still up, a gear unsafe condition is present, or a combination. This is supposed to prevent this exact scenario, but even after thousands of gear up landings and more warnings it still is a prevalent danger. Lack of checklist usage or landing flows can be very dangerous!

To all those pilots out there: There are those who have landed gear up and those who will.

You'd be wise to remember that saying.
>>
>>1778306
So I can't just click L3 to lower the gear and auto-land?
>>
>>1778306
Doesn't that mean they'd have to be hearing that tone all the time, shouldn't warning tones be a rare occurrence?
>>
>>1778364
Nope. When you start a steeper descent (as they did) power will typically come back to idle or just above, and the threshold for the alarm/horn may be 20% power or whatever, meaning you'll hear it for a good chunk of the descent. It doesn't have to be going for an hour, it can occur even in the span of several seconds.

To really show how well an alarm can be toned out, listen as he rounds out and begins the flare. It changes from a solid tone to an alternating tone, a feature designed to catch the pilot's attention. The pilot and front passenger are so focused on the approach and touchdown they completely miss it.

Lots of cool phenomenon are associated with aviation. Next time you have a window seat on a commercial flight take a closer look at the wing.

A wing creates a pressure differential by altering the velocity and direction of localized air flow above and below the airfoil to create lift. This is pretty straight forward at low speeds, but nobody wants to cross an ocean at 130 miles an hour, so we go fast. Aerodynamics change as you approach the speed of sound, and the free-stream air is then referred to as compressible flow. Compressible flow is when the relative velocity of the free stream air approaches Mach 1.0. This is associated with the formation of a shock wave, which under normal circumstances, is transparent.

If the sun is at an acceptable angle, the change in air density due to the shock wave will create a shadow. This is the line that you can see dancing back and forth along the wing, and distorting the image at the base of the winglet. While a typical commercial airliner will cruise at about Mach 0.75-0.79 or so, the shape of the wing causes the air above the airfoil to accelerate, which then approaches the speed of sound, forming a shock wave.

Not an incredibly exciting webm but I always found that to be a neat thing.

Another cool phenomenon is called aerodynamic contrails

There are two types of contrails: exhaust contrails and aerodynamic contrails. Exhaust contrails are common, and they result from the change in exhaust temperature due to low ambient temperatures and gas expansion principles, coupled with an increase in moisture as a byproduct of combustion.

Aerodynamic contrails are less common and not often seen from a passenger's perspective. This webm shows the formation of an aerodynamic contrail directly over the wing during initial descent. This is a result of the low pressure above the wing bringing the localized air to saturation, and because of the cold ambient temperatures (ISA -56°C) the moisture freezes almost instantly to form an iridescent film. The ice crystals that result refract the light, causing the rainbow to appear. Aerodynamic contrails typically only form if the air is very humid, as they require moisture to rapidly freeze.

Not a very long webm, but a good example of a difficult to find phenomenon.

Generally speaking they are reasonably maneuverable. They won't roll or pitch like an Extra 330 or climb like a rocket, but the controls are responsive. Aircraft in the normal category (most GA aircraft) can typically withstand up to +3.8/-1.5 Gm so they aren't flimsy. They aren't built like a tank, but if you use them as they were designed they are strong.

Flying is flying, whether your aircraft has afterburners or cloth wings.

Airshows. Of course, when I started I wanted to be a military pilot too, but when I started flying I realized that there is so much more to aviation than going fast and shooting shit. I could have just as much fun pursuing a career in commercial aviation, and I wouldn't have to sign for six years or so, complete a deployment or two (splitting ground responsibilities and occasionally flying) then find another job.

Aviation is as interesting as you make it. Some people only consider F/A-18s to be cool, viewing a 737 or an A320 as a glorified bus. I'd argue anything from a J-3 Cub to the BAC Concorde are just as fascinating, all things considered.

Enjoy a dusk approach from the cockpit of an A320 into Copenhagen

Guess that answers that question.

How do you even get into civilian piloting? I've looked into it, because I'd love to fly light aircraft (like those Cesna webms, working on remote areas an such), but in order to get your foot in the door it seems you're basically required to be ex-military. Helicopters in particular, pretty much every Heli pilot i've talked to or heard of has been ex-military.
>>
>>1783863
This is my question, are all commercial pilots exmilitary?
>>
>>1784424
Used to be pretty much all were ex-mil, but now a lot of colleges offer a 2-year course to get various certifications. I'm by no means an expert and have also just been looking to get into it, but it may also be that heli pilots are still predominantly ex-military.

Anyone have the one with it's raining men?

Go to a flight school, either part 61 or 141 and get an introductory flight. Helicopter training is much more expensive than airplanes. The reason you see many ex-military helicopter pilots is that the military will often subsidize their ratings, and since it is an opportunity most won't get on their own, they go for it.

General aviation is a ton of fun my dude. It is expensive to get into, but boy I've had so much fun in my training. You can do some stuff most people dream of, see pic related.

>>1784424
Certainly not. Many are, but I would be hesitant to say even half of them are. The majority of helicopter pilots are simply because of the financial restrictions of flight training, but fixed wing is a good mix.

I'm rated as a commercial pilot and I'm not military

That doesn't look safe... Fun, but not safe.

Perhaps not the safest way to operate an airplane, but he broke no regulations and it sure looks fun. Risk is an inherent part of flying, but we all have our limits. Admittedly, he also needs some work on his coordination judging from that skidding turn.

carrying this topic forward, expect around 5k to 5,500 to complete a pilots license (with you doing the book work), and it'll take you about 50-60 hours in air time to complete it. best way to do it is twice a week after work if you are first shift, two hours a night until you are done. don't stop, or you get rusty.

General aviation is absolutely perfect for getting you and 3 (or 5) people wherever you want to go AFFORDABLY, if you value you time at fuckall anything and the distance is a 4-10 hour car drive away.

Then get your fucking IFR. don't stop at PPL.

That's actually cheap as fuck. It costs ~$10k to get a Heavy Rigid license in my region simply because you have to pay someone to supervise you while you tally up required driving hours to be eligible for the full license. I imagine a pilots license here would be around the same, since I'm assuming $5500 is an American price.
