Sharks have multiple secret entry points associated with hydrothermal vents which allow access into the deeper layers of the earth. We think these entrances were crafted by an ancient race of lizard people who dwell there and send the sharks out periodically to do their bidding.

Octopus like to stay in caves and other tight spaces. Even the very tiny.

A very old way of catching them is basically putting a clay pot attacked to a buoy on the ocean bottom in an area where they are known to live, and just hauling it up later. The octopus will instinctively cling to the walls of the pot, and you just draw it up and out.

The deep ocean gives fuckall of a care over how things work on the surface.

In school, I was often autistic-angry when people would say "all life starts with the sun". Ocean trench biology can revolve almost, if not totally, around smoker vents belching volcanic chemicals into the ocean. The sun could go out tomorrow, and they would neither notice nor care.

Cephalopods are widely considered to be the inheritors of the earth.

If humanity every kicked off, there's a sizable group of scientists that feel our tentacled brethren will be the ones to take our spot. Adaptive, intelligent, fast learners and with good limbs to manipulate the environment, if they every lick the short lifespan and tool use problem, they could become a serious force.

Dead whales trigger shark orgies.

Sharks don't like much of anything, even eachother, even if they wanna fuck, and it gets worse the bigger the breed is. It's been observed that, when a whale dies, sharks come in droves to come gorge. Once they're full, they start to, of all things, snuggle. That's right, the taste of romance for a shark is rotting whale blubber.

I write horror fiction for a rather sizable community. The bulk of the work i do, at least 75%, is trying to somehow top the sheer roaring weirdness of the real world, or trying to refit portions of it so that it sounds believable.

The more you learn about the world, all the stuff that just happens, the more you realize Earth is pretty cool, fucked up, and generally worth poking about it.

Humanity can suck, and be amazing in turns, earth as a whole rarely fails to amaze.

Orcas kill Great Whites for munchies all the time, and as a 10 footer, this one would just be a snack for the sea police, which average 25-30 and travel in packs. It also explains why it took it straight to the surface afterwards.

Dolphins attack them too, though it's a defensive thing and they usually don't eat them. They just ram them full tilt, being much faster and more maneuverable, and a shark's cartilage skeleton is no match for a dolphin bone torpedo.

Sperm whales average 60 feet, but they are quite a bit slower, and big sharks usually aren't on their menu - think he coulda gotten away from one of those.

There are places in South America with water-filled holes so deep nobody's found the bottom yet. Also some have species that live ONLY in that hole. Not that area, not just rare, that one, single water-filled hole in the earth, and nowhere else.

Buried oceans that have never seen sun, lakes of hypersaline water on the ocean floor, caves locked in ice so cold and dense it's like time froze solid eons ago. The earth is fucking amazing, man, don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise.

We trot around like such proud peacocks, the biggest damn frogs in the pond, most of us never even guessing at all the weird, scary, glorious shit around us. Humanity might break your spirit, but you never give up on earth, lads.

Earth is fucking cool. Even moreso in the wet places, where it's hard to go. Don't let anyone or anything tell you the world's all figured out.

the fish gets into the sea cucumber's ass. It then gets both food, and shelter. The sea cucumber gets a goddamn fish in it's ass. They evolved teeth in their ass to bite and evict them, it's that much of a problem. So, whenever you're feeling down, realize it could be worse.

>>1783196
Nature doesn't give a fuck about efficiency, just whatever works, in the end. Yes, indeed, it is eating...why it walks on it's face i'm sure makes sense if you look at the gran march of evolution. I mean, i hope, anyway...

This is the same reason why fucking about in a pressurized airplane cabin is a really bad idea. Pressure can turn flesh to jelly in horrifyingly short order. They were doing work on a pressurized pipe on the bottom of the ocean. A crab was crabbing. And, as you see, it gets ripped through a hole the width of a carbide blade.

Also, >>1784693 is right, there are big blobs of free liquid trapped in the deeper depths of the crust that have been totally isolated, some since the fucking earth first cooled. It's been shot with a poisoned harpoon tooth by the sail. The fact that it can move at all is actually rather impressive. Cone snail stings are VERY lethal to humans, and not many hospitals keep antivenom on hand for them. what's more, some breeds can kill a fully grown human in just a few minutes. a lot of places won't even allow you to own or transport them due to the danger.

Also, dolphins are assholes.

No, really, they're one of the few members of the animal kingdom that actually seems to enjoy the pain and suffering of others. They have been observed playing "catch" with baby dolphins until they die, engaging in gang-rapes, and generally being entirely too human. What's more, they appear to enjoy and even actively plan this stuff, even against other species, including humans.

I was reading something interesting about these fuckers the other day.
Most creatures on the face of the planet have a somewhat fixed set of RNA that they work off of for cell reproduction.
The octopus, however, does not give a fuck about standard convention. It can actively alter it's own genetic code to adapt to its environment. I have no idea if it is directed or automatic, but it's cool as shit either way.

Once the researchers realized they can do this, they started looking into it more and they suspect that all creatures can do it to an extremely limited degree.

All of them.

Meanwhile, pic semi-related: that's a white blood cell hunting bacteria, but they've discovered single celled critters on the ocean floor the size of pinballs.

This doesn't seem all that neat, but for ages there was considered to be a set limit on how big a single-celled critter could be. They kept finding all these odd tracks in the muck on the deep ocean floor, and assumed they were made by some kind of shellfish or tiny, muck-sucking something or other.

Nope, giant amoebas that roll around in packs.

They're fucking HUGE for single-celled things, and fly in the face of a good chunk of well established scientific thought. Remember, kids, science is the fine art of finding out how wrong you are. Science, real science, is an endless quest to find out stuff you didn't know, or to find out more about stuff you already do. Whenever you see a well-dressed labcoat talking down his nose about the ignorant masses, or how impossible something is, you're looking at a spokeman, not a scientist.

A good scientist has more in common with the kid in school who decided to find out what was in the hole in the dirt behind the playground by jamming his arm in it then a politician.

Thanks! I dig the world. I'm bitter about a lot of shit, have a broken back and am unlikely to actually see any of this shit myself, but goddamn is it fucking cool as hell. I love nature, and so should you, dammit. I'm not saying we all need to be hippies, but we should at least gain an appreciation for all the weird, gross, and cool shit out there.

Fun fact: if you haven't seen one in person, polar bears are the scariest goddamn thing ever.

They are fucking HUGE. I mean massive, one on it's back legs can stand 8-10 feet tall with ease. They are very strong, and are (likely, by reports) in the "humans taste good" camp. They look all cute and cuddly, like those ones on the coke commercial, right? just big, shy bears.

No, no they are goddamn not. You are required, by law, to carry a gun in Alaska in many of the lonelier places of the state, expressly so the polar bears do not eat you. They well generally tell you that if you see a polar bear, and it doesn't fuck off right away, fucking shoot it. They will chase you, and eat you. Even more fun, they are fantastic swimmers, can dive fairly well, and have been known to suddenly burst up out of supposedly frozen ice shelves, especially when hunting.

About as cute and cuddly as a snapping turtle with a sawblade mouth.

For anyone who doesn't know the specifics, these are goliath grouper also known as jew fish. In 1990 it became illegal to kill a goliath grouper either by spear or hook in fact in many places (I live in Florida btw and am a regular in the Keys and all along the coast just fyj) if you get caught bringing a goliath grouper in just to take a picture with before releasing, you will be fined LUDICROUS amounts of dough. All this being said, goliath groupers (now comes the origin of their more pol approved name) are notorious fish stealers. 10 times out of 10 you reel in a fish or have a fish on your spear a jew fish will fucking take a huge chunk out of it or will steal it altogether. There numbers in my honest opinion based on the fact that they are fucking everywhere seems to suggest to me that the ban should probably be lifted
