There's an ova of the first two episodes that are much better at opening the series.
Overall though it doesn't really get going until a couple dozen episodes in, although once you get used to the dated animation it really does have some of the best characters and most interesting plot of any animation I've seen

the anime bombed in japan before they even sent it over to the dubbers, who had already bought the license to distribute and dub it. The japanese company gave them free reign to do whatever they want, and that dub came from it. That's the legal, official english dub.

Whenever a culture is close to dying, in most cases, you see a massive shift in the populace towards two things:

1. Authoritarian cosmopolitan thinking
2. Fascination with trans sexualism.

The populace believes that the old way of doing things are no longer necessary and this begin to hate and detest those whom still keep traditional thoughts. They actually begin to find the notion of traditional values disgusting and summarily shame and demonize the traditionalists. Particularly when those folks question sexual fads. The sexual fads (transexualism) are lauded as the intellectual fetish of the cosmopolitan and therefore cannot be scrutinized.

This is reflected heavily In the medium of art. One only has to look at early greek/roman/Hellenistic art and compare it to art at the decline of their perspective cultures. Japan is Hellenistic and has been ever since westernization after WW2.

Japan is dying. And because they have lost their masculine tradition only cosmotrannies are left to protect the culture.

At this they will fail. And China will reap the benefits.

If you think that transsexualism is causing the downfall of Japan, you are an idiot. The same with thinking "traditional values" are anything but a tradition. Values change with the times, and they don't really have a heavy sway on success. What is really destroying Japan is otaku culture, and that may have some influences from trans and gay culture, it is wholly a product of the same problem that is coming up here in the U.S. of man/woman-children. This regression into an idealized version of reality that pushes people into some fantasy, like the waifu ideas and trump supporters. The fantasy that these things are real is what keeps them going in life, but ultimately lead to the downfall of their civilizations if it doesn't get fixed.

Anime is considered relatively niched in Japan. Transexuality in Japan is generally looked down upon. It's also not widespread transexuality which is the first indicator of a fall, but homosexuality. You're conflating a niche'd hobby with the general culture which holds very little in 1 and 2 in comparison to West/North Europe and certain parts of America. As far as sexual masculinity goes, they generally don't insert as the twink or trap but the perpetrator. It's similar to the old thinking that "it's not gay as long as you aren't the bottom" mentality.
