That's not how it works. Caloric intake is just a part of the equation. Its more about how those calories are stored and metabolized. People or diets that focus on counting calories alone are generally ineffective, because it misses the point. What is more important is how quickly your body breaks down the foods and the effect it has on your hormonal systems.

Its similar to the difference between gasoline and diesel - except that those fuels require different temperatures. Foods that are easily accessed to be metabolized break down quicker. So white carbs and sugars break down quickly and cause a rapid spike in blood sugar. This triggers an insulin response which then causes you to store nutrients as fat. 2000 calories of simple carbs will cause you to gain more weight than 2000 calories of a high-fiber carb.

Foods that cause insulin spikes also lead to storage of the nutrients and as that spike declines you get hungry again. So it causes people to eat more often. High fiber foods break down slowly, preventing insulin spikes, and delaying the onset of feeling hungry again.
