It really depends, in this case the person was gonna get hurt no matter what.

In many less serious cases though (especially with regular peddle bikes), it's much better to stay on the bike and basically ride it into the ground, letting it take the impact for you. I know a lot of people who broke their wrists because they let go of the bike and landed hand-first, and a lot of people who held on to the handles even though it seemed insane and walked away with just a few scratches.

Anyway, the best case against the death penalty I've seen is the case of Cameron Willingham's execution for Arson. In Texas, Gov. Rick Perry refused to hear the complaints of several scientists and experts on the case, and went ahead and authorized the execution of Willingham for the 'murder' of his wife and children. In reality there was wide consensus that the fire was accidental. Innocent man dies because of the poor judgement of the Gov. and the State, wouldn't have happened in a case of life imprisonment.

(On a related note, I'm glad discussions about capital punishment don't get as headed as stuff like abortion, and that it's still possible to actually talk about it without it being too crazy)

Stopping distance depends on your speed, not only because the brakes have to work harder to drop more speed, but mostly because your reactions don't magically improve because your engine is going faster.
Even if you could stop in 2 car lengths (fat chance past 60mph, most people would struggle to stop in that distance at 40mph), the distance you would travel before you REALISED you needed to stop is more like 4 car lengths. So that's a minimum of 6 with no room for error.
