I got lots of work to do tonight, which means I'm not doing any of it.

Anyone want to learn about a specific aircraft or have aviation questions in general? I eat, sleep, and breathe aviation, and fly myself, although not for the military. Help me procrastinate, /wsg/

Have a gorgeous JASDF RF-4E Phantom getting toasty on a foggy Japanese morning. I'm sure glad they are still operating these machines, I was pretty sad to see the Luftwaffe retire these several years ago. They're from a different age, for sure.

Block 50's have a General Electric F110-GE-129 and the Block 52's have Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229, both rated at 29,000 lbs. Both have the same electronic suite, so in reality its just a difference of engine preference.

I'm afraid there isn't a whole lot of information on it, not public information anyways. In my eyes it appears to be a bit of a scramble to match or one-up the United States' B-2 Spirit, but I have my doubts. I think economics will become a roadblock with respect to the project's rather ambitious projections for it's integration. The problem is that they have no stealth bombers currently in service, and they are competing with a bomber that has been in active service for 19 years.

In my humble and irrelevent opinion, I think they'll stick to their Tu-22M3's and Tu-95MS' for the foreseeable future

Russia doesn't have money to fully arm their infantry let alone drop billions on a stealth bomber.

Russia doesn't really know what they are doing Stealth wise anyways.

IMO the biggest problem for Russia has always been them not being able to afford making their new designs in any real numbers. They just straight up can't afford it.

Electronic warfare is the way of the future as far as air combat is concerned. The issue is that stealth technology is incredibly costly to research and manufacture, so it becomes prohibitively expensive for most to invest in.

Now, there are cheaper ways to compete in the modern stealth age. The F-22, F-35, and B-2 are all equipped with passive and active stealth technology, meaning that they are (to some degree) invisible to conventional radar technology, and contain jamming equipment too.

I have heard of MiG-21s being outfitted with proper radar jamming equipment and countermeasures, and just by doing that they climb out of the pages of mid-60's warfare history and become a viable competitor again. They do not have the expensive coatings and specialized passive stealth design features, but they certainly can hide behind jamming equipment.

The MiG-21 isn't necessarily the point. The idea is that you can take old aircraft and essentially boost it up a generation simply by overhauling the electronic suite and weapon systems to make it competitive again.

>it kills half the people who try and fly it
That's just because they put low-time pilots with no experience in these rockets. If they could afford the training and enforce higher standards it wouldn't be nearly as deadly.

You can definitely make an older airframe more effective by upgrading the systems, in fact, that's pretty much what the MiG-21 was designed for.

However, I'd argue that at this stage the MiG is simply too old to compete with modern aircraft, regardless of the electronics package.

If one does not have passion in life i'd imagine it would be very dull and meaningless.

I love the physics behind how they fly, the aerodynamic forces at play that we cannot see. I love the systems that work in harmony with each other, each with their own crafty design and purpose, under the command of a human. I love the slow speeds and relaxed pace of a low performance glider, I love the face-melting speeds of fighters. Some are designed to skim the surface of the ocean and take advantage of ground effect, some are designed to skim the very edge of the atmosphere in the coffin corner where the pressure would kill you almost instantly.

Every one of them was designed with purpose, designed to fly a little differently from the others. Pretty ones, ugly ones, successful planes and failures.

I study the various aspects of aviation for school and flight training, but when I go home in the evening I find that I return to the subject just to learn more. I love teaching about aviation and sharing my passion with others so the next time they take a flight or look into the sky they see more than a bus with wings or just another contrail.

They aren't? The EA-18G is brand new.

At any rate, electronic warfare isn't disappearing, the technology is changing. We now incorporate electronic warfare elements into fighters as opposed to relying on an E-2 or E-3 nearby. Instead of an E-3 being the central hub to which all information is relayed and distributed, fighters can now receive air/land target information directly from satellites, AWACS, and other fighters through a data link. AWACS isn't going away either; they are airborne coordinators as well as information centers.

Couldn't find any good video of the E-2 systems in use cause most of it is classified, so have an E-2C recovery on the Charles de Gaulle

Never let anyone tell you that flying has to be a rich man's hobby.

In my humble opinion, gliding is one of the best and purest forms of flying out there. You learn the fine art of stick and rudder skills and practiced one of the most overlooked practices in aviation: energy management. Gliders are relatively cheap to own, there is no fuel cost, no engine inspections/maintenance to worry about, and you have one of the highest ATC handling priorities, right behind a balloon or blimp. With the proper skills, knowledge, experience, and equipment, you can stay up almost indefinitely, soar up into the flight levels (>18,000 ft MSL), and go further than 800km.

Hang on, I'll make a webm..

Ok, so here is a video I took personally, soaring over Arizona. We are in a Schwizer SGS 233, a twin-seat low-performance trainer. If you have the skills and knowledge of where to find thermals, you can get pretty high up there (that flight maxed out at 15,400 ft MSL). Here we are performing a deep stall.

Initially we are flying straight and level. To start, we pitch down to trade altitude for airspeed. Once we reach a sufficient airspeed, we pull back on the stick and bring the nose up (we probably reach a ~50° nose up attitude). We trade the airspeed for altitude, and once our airspeed reaches ~0 kts, the wings aren't producing lift and we're all out of kinetic energy. Because we stalled at a very steep pitch up attitude, the nose falls to almost a vertical pitch down attitude. The airspeed builds rapidly, and we pitch up to avoid excessive altitude loss and overspeed condition. Notice how quiet it gets during the stall...

The annoying beeping tone is the variometer, or a sensitive vertical speed indicator. The faster it beeps the faster the instantaneous climb rate, and a flat tone indicates a descent. The piece of string on the metal tube in front of the canopy is an extremely handy tool to tell a pilot how coordinated he is flying. If the rudder input is proper the string will be parallel to the longitudinal axis (straight back).
>>
>>1653769
thanks a lot, but isn't stalling like that dangerous?
>>
>>1653782
Nope. The center of gravity is forward of the center of lift, so when the aircraft loses lift the nose pitches down and airspeed is recovered. The Schwizer 2-33 is such a stable aircraft it will literally recover itself in a stall. It has a massive 51' straight high camber wing so it'll fly at a very low airspeed.

The only time this would be dangerous is near the ground, say during an approach.
>>
>>1653769
I hear that beeper all the time in gliding videos.

Does anyone ever get rid of it for a more pleasant flight or is it mandatory?

With a normal plane you have an engine, which provides thrust to propel the aircraft forward. Forward motion (airspeed) is necessary for a wing to generate lift. To establish a climb, power is added and the pitch attitude is increased, and the aircraft ascends.

With a glider, you have no engine. They rely on gravity and a high glide ratio to generate airspeed. They rely on thermals, or rising air columns, to climb. The variometer tells them if they are climbing or descending, so it is used to locate and use the thermals in order to stay aloft. You can turn it off if you are descending, but if you want to stay in the air, you'll keep it on.

tldr: the variometer (beepy thingy) tells the aircraft if its climbing. No climb means descent for a glider, and for a plane with no engine, you won't stay in the air.

Pic sorta related: A winch tow. Basically a dude at the other end of the airfield with a Chevy small block V8 connected to a reel of spring steel connected on the other end to the airplane. Put it in gear, foot goes down, and plane starts moving. The "55" and "75" are speed callouts; too fast and the dude comes off the gas a bit.

Because, generally speaking, its not very useful.

If you pull a Cobra or some other maneuver in which the aircraft departs*, you've now lost all your airspeed, and must trade altitude to recover. In a dogfight, they start at altitude and terminate at low altitudes, generally in a big spiral. If you place the aircraft in a situation where the airspeed is low and the wings are stalled, you've burned yourself and lost the altitude advantage, because your opponent will not have to lose altitude and recover too. By the time your aircraft recovers your opponent is now several hundred (perhaps thousand) feet above you, and that's a good way to lose a fight. The only place it comes in handy is if your aircraft is maxed out on AoA but you need to turn just a bit tighter to place the gunsight on him, you can. But, if you miss, now you're fresh out of potential energy and you gotta recover before he turns in on you.

Also, in this day and age, fighters with helmet-mounted targeting systems don't have to screw around with keeping the nose on the opponent, they simply have to keep eyes on you and the missile will do all the hard work.

*technically thrust vectoring aircraft enter a controlled departure, so it isn't a true departure; they still have control but only through vectored thrust, not control surfaces.
>>
>>1653918

You see, that's the attitude that kills pilots. If this dude knew the consequence of an accelerated stall at low altitude, he wouldn't have put his MiG-21 into a Lybia suburb and killed a kid.

Bluefor simply can't because they don't have thrust vectoring planes.

>>1653946
Cobra is a meme and only a manoeuvrability demonstrator, there are many other pure thrust vectoring tricks. Modern jets have insanely high TWR and bleeding speed is not a big problem. If planes are going for the close combat then thrust vectoring is an obvious plus, because it comes for free and lets your plane turn instantly in any direction to fire close range missile. If situation requires conserving speed then simply don't use it.

No one on earth knows if 5 gen meme design decisions are even worth it. Or how future jet combat will even look like. And it's an f-35 that is jumping headlong into that bandwagon of unproven concepts, discarding all previous combat proven principles.
>>
>>1654635
What you are saying isn't true. Energy management always has and always will be an integral part of air to air combat no matter how good the engines become. You can't perform a cobra without loosing all your airspeed, at which point you are an extremely vulnerable target; if a situation requires you to pull a cobra to engage, you really shouldn't be using it.
>>
>>1653949
Very good glider pilots chose to ignore the vario from time to time because they are good enough at feeling the air that their own senses are better than a vario which has a lag of at least a second. You tend not to turn it off unless you are landing or taking off.

Very carefully.
On top of the rickety landing gear pilots have crap visibility as they go in for a landing, so the plane gets chased by a car the driver of which lets the pilot know exactly how far off the ground his wheels are.
The plane then comes to a halt and those helper wheel struts get reattached for the trip to the hangar.

I'm always around

Military comms are much the same as civilian, with a few exceptions. Military aircraft transmit on UHF radio while civilian aircraft transmit on VHF. This is why, save for heavies and larger planes such as C-17s, C-130s, KC-135s (they transmit in UHF and VHF) you can hear tower's instructions but no response on ATC. They'll have open channels to talk in between aircraft, and hand signals for communication in formation (right turn, left turn, switch to X frequency). Also instead of their tail number or company callsign (N123AB or Cactus123) they'll have a flight specific callsign. If it is a flight of 3 aircraft then the base callsign will remain the same (Hammer 22, Hammer 23, etc), and when they call up, the lead aircraft will state "XXXX tower, Hammer flight"

Apart from that its pretty close to civilian comms.

The U-2 is the hardest aircraft in the world to land. The plane is brought and held in ground effect until the speed bleeds off and the wing experiences a full stall. This is when the airflow exceeds the critical angle of attack and can no longer remain attached to the upper surface of the wing, causing the aircraft to fall from 1-2 ft above the runway. The wing does not stop producing a force until the aircraft is completely stopped on the runway, so they use ailerons and spoilers to keep the aircraft level and upright, rolling on the bicycle landing gear. The wings also act like a pole to a tightrope walker, adding to the lateral balance. Because of the incredible wingspan and the extremely narrow wheelbase, the U-2 is quite sensitive when it comes to crosswind component.

Once the speed is so low the wings cannot generate the force required to remain upright, the wing drops onto a skid plate on each wingtip, at which point a ground crew physically levels the wings and replaces the pogos (temporary/removable landing gear) so they can taxi off the runway.

Thurst Vectoring, when used by an unskilled pilot, can give your enemy an edge in combat. IAF SU30MKIs had a hard time at Red Flag because their pilots would constantly rely on their thrust vectoring which would cause the aircraft to start falling and give their opponent a chance to go vertical and get them.

F-15s have taken out green F-22 pilots when they make the same mistake.
>>
>>1646067
Apparently the A-4 crew survived that bomb collision.
>>
>>1663175
Except the pilot isn't in a spacesuit, the visibility isn't as restricted, the speeds are lower, the weight is lower, and the fact that the U-2 is notorious for ground looping. A glider also does not have a jet engine which still produces thrust at flight idle, so the float, touchdown, and rollout are all much longer as the energy isn't as quick to bleed off.

The equipment on the U-2 varies from mission to mission, but typically it will be an array of very high resolution cameras capable of imaging in the visible and infrared spectral ranges. Sometimes they will outfit them with very narrow-band detectors for picking up specific types of radiation, and equipment for tapping into communication sources (radio or satellite comms). Often times they will have a high resolution LIDAR on board for ground mapping and other applications. Real-time information is relayed to different sources via an onboard datalink using satellites.

Here is a NASA ER-2 high altitude research aircraft (the non-military variant of the U-2) circling over the Sonoran Desert (140 miles southwest of Phoenix) performing calibration and validation tests for the GOES-16 satellite.

Extremely high resolution imagery, the capability to gather intelligence whenever you need it, a communications relay between operations and ground forces, communications espionage, communication/electronic warfare disruption, and more. If you need a detailed 3D map/imagery of a location for a special forces operation and you need it today, the U-2 can do that.

There is a reason they just went through an upgrade program. Current projections claim the U-2 will be in service through 2023, and Lockheed says the airframes are good through 2050. Its also about $4000 cheaper per flight hour than the RQ-4 Global Hawk, so economically its still the best option.

There's an A-10 webm someone posted in one of these threads awhile ago. It's taken with some people standing on some sort of balcony, and you can hear someone say like "here it comes" or something like that just before it fires.

Anyone know which one I'm talking about/anyone have it and can post it? Would greatly appreciate it.

I wish this thread wasn't limited to military aviation, there is so much more to flight than fighters and bombs.

Anyways, have a T-45 Goshawk practicing air to ground maneuvers with inert rounds. The munitions they are employing do not have an integral guidance system (such as GPS or laser guidance), and are thus called "unguided", "gravity", or "dumb" bombs. They aren't inaccurate, though.

These munitions are aimed manually by the pilot using a method called CCIP, or Constantly Computed Impact Point. This method takes various aircraft flight parameters such as gravity, airspeed, altitude, bank angle, attitude, etc. and feeds this information into a computer. Utilizing a predictable ballistic trajectory, the computer calculates and displays the information to the pilot in the form of a line drawn from the flight director to a set of crosshairs, indicating where the bomb will impact the ground. The crosshairs move accordingly to changing parameters, so all the pilot has to do is place the crosshairs on the target and release, and the bomb should be pretty darn close.

I consider every plane unique and special in their own right, but the U-2/ER-2 is my favorite aircraft of all time. I'd do just about anything to fly one of those, I'm super jealous. Sorry to hear about your jet man, I bet that whole situation was rough.

Anyways, blue skies my dude (although there isn't much blue above that plane..). Happy flying
