1. People get a sort of tingling sensation (there's a "scientific" word for it, which is where the acronym ASMR comes from). These people will watch videos that are exclusively about sound.

2. People use them for relaxation. These have more involved sound videos (ear cupping, scalp massage, breathing exercise), or regular roleplay videos (ranging from "doctor checks your vision" to "this video is set in the future and you have a travel agent telling you which planets you should visit").

3. People use them to alleviate loneliness. These people will watch videos that are almost entirely roleplays and specifically romantic girlfriend/"caring friend" roleplays.

4. People who use them to masturbate. Probably a small group, but significant enough that they should be mentioned. These people will watch videos that are basically girls flashing their tits or whispering overtly-sexual dialogue. I don't know why they don't just watch porn, but whatever.

The most popular ASMR "creators", mostly women (there are a few men who are successful though), do videos that range from category 1 to category 3. Some, like ASMRrequests and Gentlewhispering, are almost exclusively in category 2.
