The type of action is called long recoil, if you like how it works.

Barrel and bolt are locked together, both move back from recoil. Barrel moves back forwards, bolt stays back, round is ejected, then bolt moves forwards.

maybe the detonation has to occur a fraction of the second before actual impact, and the missile has a light-based distance sensor on the tip that activates when whatever guidance brought it to the target detects a threshold of proximity is passed?

>Ejection of an empty clip created a distinctive metallic "pinging" sound.[37] In World War II, reports arose in which German and Japanese infantry were making use of this noise in combat to alert them to an empty M1 rifle in order to 'get the drop' on their American enemies. The information was taken seriously enough that U.S. Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground began experiments with clips made of various plastics in order to soften the sound, though no improved clips were ever adopted.[36] According to former German soldiers, the sound was inaudible during engagements and not particularly useful when heard, as other squad members might have been nearby ready to fire.[38] Seasoned U.S. infantry soldiers would sometimes purposely toss an empty en-bloc clip creating the same sound a Garand makes when it has fired its last shot and is empty, in an effort to draw out the enemy, with varying degrees of success.

memes, mostly. its not a bad round in and of itself, it just wasn't as widely accepted as 9mm was. ammo is a bit pricier, although not enough of a difference to really matter, and it kicks a bit harder.

So i've never actually handled a Garand but i've always been curious, what triggers the bolt assembly (or whatever you would call it) to go forward, is it when the clip is fully seated and you just have to push it in and pull your thumb out really fast? or is there something else?

Yes, the bolt closes automatically when the clip is fully seated (most of the times, so Garands need some slapping to close the bolt), that's why you are supposed to rest the palm of your hand against the lever and keep it pressed until you take your thimb out

to explain further, light travels at different speeds through air of different densities, and light rays change direction when their speed changes so when there's differences in air pressure very close together the result is a distorted image.

Mechanically the bolt release is linked to the feeding arm inside the magazine (M1 is an internal magazine). When the En-bloc (metal piece that holds the rounds), or clip is also acceptable, is inserted it pushes down on the feeding arm. When the feeding arm reaches the bottom of the magazine, it releases the bolt.

Here's one of the Army's training videos, skip to about two minutes in.

Takedown rifles like that would never be that accurate on the first shot. The barrel would be slightly off and the scope would be way off. You'd have to take several shots and sight in the rifle by looking at where the shots land before you could actually take an accurate shot like that.
>>
>>1638926
Then how do assassins make a kill with a single shot?
>>
>>1608575
That bloody supressor moves around so much it's not even funny.
>>
>>1638933
They use rifles that you don't take apart. The Carcano Model 91/38 carbine used by Lee Harvey Oswald in the assassination of JFK was not a takedown rifle. Neither was any rifle used by any successful assassin.

>>
>>1637886
It's almost exclusively a stance of ignorance. Read up on any sort of anti-gun propganda, especially campaign videos, where-in they actually discuss guns and it becomes immediately evident how little the majority of them know about firearms.
My personal favorite is the one wherein they claim a 50-cal ( I think they used a picture of an AWM, but they just called it "the fifty caliber rifle") when equipped with heat-seeking incendiary rounds (which, that's not a super-special bullet, they thought incendiary meant heat-seeking) could destroy an airplane in a single shot.

>>
>>1636004

>>
>>1639922
I did the math on this once.

At cruising altitude, and from a ground level of 0 feet above sea level, you would need to fire something like 45 seconds before the plane flies overhead. When it gets to height, there's only a few joules of energy left, and even the most accurized gun and ammo would still have a minute of angle bigger than the plane itself, depending on the plane.

I didn't even include anything like wind resistance or drift or crosswind, but trying to take down a plane is damn near impossible from sea level.

If it's on the tarmac and so are you, though, it can be done really easily.

Hah. You pleb. If you don't cheap out like a poorfag on glass you don't ever have to take more than one shot to sight in a rifle.

Also,

Not having a QD scope that indexes repeatedly after takedown/reassembly

What a pleb.
>>
>>1636015
Is the video slow enough to catch something like that?

It definitely appears to be some sort of impact preceding the missile, so I'm tempted to believe it's something like you said. Maybe it's just dust or dirt being poofed off the section of the tank where that wave hits, instead of some sort of optical effect of the wave hitting the tank.
>>
>>1638926
Many rifles are able to retain zero after dissassembly. Blaser r8/r93, sauer etc. Some quick detach scope mounts are great (like Blaser).

It's supposed to move. It helps the barrel unlock, tilt, and load a new cartridge. It's typically called a "booster" or Nielson device. There's a piston that attaches to the barrel while the suppressor will move forward when fired and the barrel will move backward like it's supposed to. It then returns under spring force.

There's no such thing as "being quick enough". If you don't hold back the bolt handle with the blade of your hand while inserting a clip, you're an idiot.

>bullet passes under skin travelling laterally along the long axis

>skin keeps it inside until curvature of the skull is too severe
