I have done animation, hell I even did a two year course of it at university. The final projects that students that had only started animation when the course started (and there were such individuals) had better facial animation than this.

It wasn't the RPG elements or the character writing or the relationships. It was the atmosphere created by being the eccentric new guy nobody believed in chasing conspiracy theories and exploring the oldest parts of the galaxy looking for a lost civilisation.
ME2, while good in its own right, stripped all of this out in favour of badass power fantasy interstellar space renegade banging alien chicks and taking matters into his own hands 'for the good of the galaxy'. It was thematically inept and while the gameplay mechanics were much better it pushed the snowball down the road of corridor shooting and waifus and away from compelling space opera.
