Ok last one

Like it or not, the F-35 has a really powerful engine. Its Pratt & Whitney F135 engine throws out 43000 lbs of thrust, which is fantastically powerful for a low-bypass afterburning turbofan, second only to a Kuznetsov NK-25 (50,000+ lbs/engine).

A google search of "mayday race 42 kevin" returns the following video, uploaded by the pilot himself:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQZpRHcmHtQ

>Kevin Eldredge, air race pilot at the Reno Air Races came to win in 2010 in the Super Sport Class. In his attempt to break Jon Sharp's Qualifying record of 412 mph the turbulence and G's ere too much for the engine and the oil filter housing broke off, dumping the oil, over-speeding the propeller, an then blowing a huge hole in the Thunderbolt Lycoming engine....

He did land it safely.

The Cessna 185, a fantastic bush plane sporting a respectable IO-520 300hp engine. One thing that set the 185 apart was the fact that at high power settings and low airspeed the propeller tips went supersonic, making for an incredibly loud takeoff.

So that's where that generic plane sound comes from
>>
>>1578373
Economics.

Fast planes cost more, extra speed makes more difference on long flights. The supersonic customer is someone who needs to physically be in (or move physical objects to) several distant places, and would gain significant value from being there faster than subsonic flight would allow. Not enough people are in that intersection to justify a fleet of supersonic craft.

Either that is some tasty bait or you don't know anything about it. It was a well-engineered plane, and after the Air France accident several changes were made to make it much safer (although the probability of a repeat accident was incredibly unlikely). Economics killed the Concorde, not the safety record.

Restored Hungarian MiG-15 firing up its VK-1 engine for the first time in a long time. The VK-1 was basically a bolt for bolt copy of the British Nene which the UK inexplicably furnished the Soviets both production units and technical drawings for. The deep hum is an artifact of the combustion cans resonating and is one of my favorite sounds in aviation, up there with the V-1 pulsejet engine.
>>
>>1587475
That deep sound is the introduction and initial combustion of the fuel inside the engine. It hums and vibrates due to the turbine blocking/opening a direct path for the noise through the turbine guide vanes from the combustor. The larger the engine, the lower frequency the noise.

Here's the light off of an Orenda type 14 engine during a test run

Just admit it that you talked like you know your shit when you had absolutely no idea what was going on.
The in-universe description is that, it sucks in 'sound in the vicinity' then sends it out in a 'sonic shockwave' and this all works in space, without further explanation. It can't be put under 'space magic', it has to make some sense. They went the extra step and gave an incompatible explanation. Almost any other effect would have been fine, but they had to go with sound.

how does the idea of a bomb capturing the ambient sound around it and re-releasing it as somehow greater than ambient sound make any sense

why is the sound-energy in the bomb blue

sound propagates in 3d, why do these bombs only propagate in 2d

why is jango floating these shitty 2d bombs hoping Obi Wan will fly into one instead of putting it as a warhead on a guided missile

"no sound in space" is just one of many inconsistencies and complaining about it makes you seem like a 'zomg wrong generation' star trek fan

It was economically motivated, but not for what reasons the other guy said. You see, it is all about time for cost. Flying first class in a subsonic jet that flies over night for 8 hours and has seats that go horizontal (allowing you to sleep) allows a businessman to lose no waking hours of time at all. The concord had uncomfortable seats and the flight time for a trans atlantic trip was 3 hours, but you were awake and doing nothing the whole time.

So for a businessman, taking a first class flight overnight actually saves them more time than taking a 3 hour flight during the day.

>Why don't we have the nex gen super-sonics

The limit for sub-sonic jets is 0.8 mach. Going above this speed makes you enter the transonic zone (which extends from 0.8 to 1.2 mach). In this zone, drag is increased significantly for all planes because of disrupted air flow over the wings. Some of it is super sonic and some is sub sonic. Airliners value fuel efficiency, so a jet liner can either fly just below the transonic range, or above it. Jet liners fly below it for time/cost reason I explained earlier.

Other guy here. We're not in disagreement, and our points aren't contradictory. Rather, your explanation is an anecdote which fits within my explanation.

"Someone who needs to physically be in (or move physical objects to) several distant places, and would gain significant value from being there faster than subsonic flight would allow" isn't someone who can take eight hours redeye in business class instead of three hours supersonic. Because todays businesses operate at a pace where an overnight flight for a next-day is about as acceptable as a supersonic for an evening meeting, there's no need to spend the extra cost on supersonic. If being at the destination five hours earlier would bring benefits outweighing the extra cost (monetary and other) of a supersonic flight, it would be used more often as an economic fact.

As for waking hours, it's a red herring. If you want to be productive on a three hour flight, schedule desk work for when you're in the air. Or take advantage of the mid-day sleep drive and the sleep cycle being about three hours long to get a three hour nap. Sleep conforms to business needs.
