Nevermind, I looked it up. Apparently once they reach a certain size limit of approx. 50 billion times the mass of our sun, they "eat" their accretion disc and eventually stop growing -- UNLESS they collide with another black hole or a sun; however this collision won't feed it as efficiently as an active accretion disc will. With no food, and over time, black holes will dissipate due to Hawking radiation. So there it is, I think? /sci/ get in here

What I am interested in is the point origin of organic matter. So one day some cosmic shit just arbitrarily happened to inorganic matter and it became the building blocks for something as complex as life, meaning that it's now organic matter? Seems a little Frankenstein-esque. It's like if a hurricane went through a scrap yard full of 747 parts, and by chance arranged them into a fully-functioning airplane. Maybe life is rare and it's just all about probability? The universe is vast and could be infinite for all we know; and in an infinite universe there's a lot of possibility. What if we're just the freak, super rare occurrence? That means there's just one planet with life on it in ALL of existence. Or does the recent discovery of those "Earth-like" planets annul that assertion? A planet can be "Earth-like" without life, right?

And why do we care so much about this? Does life have some inherent quantum to it that dictates it must seek out other life? If we're just matter -- naturally-occurring matter that can reproduce and store information (which honestly blows my mind) -- I suppose it must.

And what about relativity? Perhaps on our planet time goes super slowly, and elsewhere it's super fast; so that in our lifetimes countless alien civs are rising and falling but do not visit or contact us due to the extreme differences in relativity? So that, relative to us, thousands, millions, or perhaps billions of years are just 80 years or so? Is that possible? To be so stranded on a planet due to relativity? Bound by laws we can't govern? Maybe I'm just retarded, and I hope someone tells me I am, because it would suck if I was right.

it's not like there's a point at which living matter becomes fundamentally different from nonliving.
carbon-based life originated from the culmination of increasingly complex building blocks, from heavy elements to simple molecules, to amino acids, to proteins, to multi-protein structures that self-assemble out of existing proteins and divide when they get too big, to collections of such self-replicating protein structures that work together.
circumstances in young earth happened to allow each of these stages to be formed from their predecessors.
the desire to find other life in the universe is a part of the simple human desire to know things, which can reasonably be attributed to an evolutionary step toward our incredibly large brains. it might also have to do with the social nature of humans, the need to be together and to seek out company.
we can already estimate the speed at which things in the universe move relative to ourselves, and it's safe to say that time dilation is not an important factor in the fact that we haven't seen any aliens yet.
relativity has everything to do with speed and gravity (time moves slower for you the faster you go or the closer you are to a black hole), and it follows simple physical laws just like all things. there's no such thing as being "stranded on a planet due to relativity", except if you were going so fast that you didn't have enough energy available on the planet to slow down, but we know that isn't the case.
