As a guy whos way too into tape decks, the reason is actually pretty simple.
As a tape plays in reverse over a head, and this requires 2 different tensioners.
So each alternates when each side of the deck plays. This means in theory that one side or the other can have worse distortion when playing than the other.
Nakamichi's solution was to use precise tensioners in their high end decks,
but for consumer level stuff (and to show off), they made the RX-202/303/505 which do the cool flipping stuff above and also have auto reverse AND low distortion, because they technically only play 1 way and everything can be more precise.

But for 99% of the other decks on the market, and hell, even portable players, losing .05% thd wasn't enough of a big deal to justify a system like this.

To calculate the inertia for the robot spinning I will assume it is a 2 meter disk.
In order for these numbers to align, the robot has to have a mass of 85.000 kg, that is just short of 190.000 lbs.

If the robot has feet about 27 cm long and 10 cm wide, it has a contact area with the ground of 540cm^2. This means it would press down into the ground with around 154 kg per cm^2. None of this makes any sense considering what we actually see happening.

How the fuck do we deal with this? I mean, as people, not as a "scary internet collective". Is there a rational way to approach the fact that governments are actively listening in on private conversations, and have backdoors available in almost all modern technology most of us use?

I've pondered on this since the news came out, but I can't really see it. It seems like the only "option" is to do away with every item of connected electronics that you haven't actively designed, or rigorously safeguarded against this. What kind of "smart"phone can I use? Is there any mail service beyond their reach? Social networks?

Other than finding loopholes and exceptions for every scenario, moving into the woods and arranging for non-electronic communication with family seems the only alternative, but it's hardly rational, if "not changing your entire lifestyle for a principle" is a requirement to be rational.

There occurs something of a chain reaction when the wood becomes hot enough to burn its own smoke. The particles the smoke consists of are basically soot, which is tiny carbon particles.
