Recording is made around 1910's when Imperial Russia was still intact. Performance is a bit eccentric, but I found it charming.
Also, the one playing piano here is Rachmaninov.

I'm /pol/ and I love Pete Seeger, his sister and brother are better musicians tho.
>>1555169
it's called "kaval" originally. if you ask me, it's the most unnecessary music instrument of all time
>>1555169
also some parts of music is just like middle- eastern and near-eastern music.
>>1577790
pre-equal temperament music usually does remind people of eastern music. IMO the equal tempered piano ruined a lot of western music.
>>1577785
Are you certain about kaval? I thought zurna was main middle-eastern counterpart of shawm. Kaval sounds more like an ordinary variation of flute.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HmPQQqGKB0
Zurna, on the contrary, sounds more like shawm. It was also pretty widespread. There is also Iranian sorna and the Chinese suona. Even the names sound similar.

They are pretty loud, but European shawm is quite a versatile instrument. As much as it can be noisy, it also can sound very gentle. It's very noticeable in Renaissance music. Shawms and shawm-derivatives were quite popular at that time.

That's expected from slightly improvised dance music, it's supposed to be wild and energetic. That feeling may also be evoked because of this specific performance. The same dance by other performers may sound different.

Medieval music is interesting because of it. Arrangement and interpretation of source material can be very versatile and authentic at the same time. When you've been given note-sheet with Bach, you play Bach and nothing more. When you get note-sheet of Guillaume de Machaut, it can be a lot of things while still being Guillaume de Machaut. Just look at how many times Palastinalied was interpreted and people still don't get tired of it.

Eberhard Kummer - Songs by Hugo von Montfort
His voice is just amazing, an he's singing geniue medieval songs as close to the original as possible, which includes a documented melody.

It's pretty intuitive.
Experiment a little bit. When you will be satisfied with the results, there should be no problems in making webms.

>reminds me of this civil war song
*sigh* You're American aren't you?
Bonnie Dundee is a Civil war song, from the Third English Civil war and then the Jacobite Rebellion, inj 1649 and 1715.
Testing
This is a song in the Sacred Harp church choir tradition, perhaps the first truly american music tradition, sung by a bunch of irish folks.
Some more Sacred Harp
I realize these are not strictly "anglophile", but plenty of people have posted unrelated folk music before me so I'm just going to keep going.
