my friends father died on a jet ski. He wanted to go between two big ships and couldn't see that there's a wire between them, it sliced his head in half
>>
>>1548885

How fucking fast was he going to have his head cut in half?
>>
>>1548849
I'm pretty sure they faked it, not by any small error in the filming, but by the logistics of things. If the plan went wrong and he actually had drowned, his friends would be prosecuted for murder.
>>

>I'm pretty sure they faked it, not by any small error in the filming, but by the logistics of things. If the plan went wrong and he actually had drowned, his friends would be prosecuted for murder.
At absolute best the prosecutor could attempt manslaughter but there's no way they'd win a jury trial.
>>
>>1548833
those propellers spin at, like, 400RPM. hardly enough to "shred you apart," certainly enough to kill you in any case though.
>>
>>1548909
Nah. I'm not saying it isn't possible to fake, but I have several reasons to not doubt the veracity.

For once, I downloaded the original (longer) video in 2005 from some shady site. It was a different era. No viral marketing, no consumer-grade cameras and seamless video editing on smart phones. Not even any big platform to distribute web video (YouTube was just a few months old and unknown), any kind of online video streaming service was in its infancy.

Secondly, these people exist. I've touched on the performance artist circle here and there. Self-harm (or at least disregard for one's own personal safety) is a big thing and to be quite honest, a very powerful message. You think Abramovic faked passing out in the middle of fire? Fuck, people do the shit he does not even for art's sake, but just for fun (breath play, autoerotic asphyxiation, etc).

Thirdly, hard to get murder charges to stick, when you have a ten minute video of the "victim" enthusastically explaining that he himself set up the whole thing. And there's a lot of shit covered under "free expression" in the constitution.

Fourth, it happened supervised with very clear boundaries. Once he lost conciousness (signalled by the involuntary exhaling and reflexive gasping) they pulled him out immediately. And fifth, his reaction is anatomically correct. Both the drowning and the resuscitation. The original video goes on longer. You can't fake his response. I've almost asphyxiated several times in my pre-adult life (probably why I was initially drawn to the video). As best as I can tell, it's the real deal. And one hell of an experience (speaking from my own).

Eh, nothing special. I've always assumed it probably happens to a lot more people than you'd think, since it happened so often to me.

I grew up with severe asthma, so by the time I entered my teens I was pretty used to dealing with heavily constricted breath. The brain is amazing, you learn your survival strategy. You just can't freak out. Freaking out makes everything so much worse - more oxygen expended, more blood rushing everywhere, the panic making you lose your mind. So in time I learned to slow my metabolism and detach my mind.

And then across a few years in my teens I almost drowned twice (love the water, but never learned to swim - you can see where this is going) and I almost choked on food twice (no real clue why it happened - it just did). On two of those I would have died without outside help.

It's a wild ride. Your body is completely freaking out and going into an emergency mode only a true threat to your life can induce. For me it was like standing calmly in the eye of a fucking tornado, watching everything go to shit "around" me while I methodically come up with a plan to survive and/or get help. And when it's over - it's a stupid clichéd saying, but it's true: The air never tasted sweeter in my life. You collapse. You are exhausted without much physical movement, literally bathed in sweat, your muscles all over your body sore both from convulsions and lack of oxygen.

It's an amazing and unique feeling. I totally *get* people chasing highs through (auto)erotic asphyxiation. It's a level of complete lack of control and an emotional rollercoaster/state of emergency that knows no second. Maybe I'll find someone I truly trust one day to do it for fun and old time's sake.
>>
>>1549108
>Self-harm (or at least disregard for one's own personal safety) is a big thing and to be quite honest, a very powerful message.

Yeah, no.

Its attention whoring behavior at best.

The problem with modern academia in develped nations int he notion that:

>I'm a no good piece of shit.
>Can't do math or any other hard science for shit.
>Can't be bothered with serious human sciences.
>THAT MUST MEAN I'M AN ARTIST!
>Time to "express myself" and let the world know how I'm 2deep4you

Can someone explain what this person was trying to do, and why he failed at it? Never rode a jet ski before, so it just looked to me like this guy refused to turn away from the ship.
>>
>>1549179
This is getting very much off-topic, but you are describing two unrelated things. There can be both serious artists and an inflation of """art""" from failed college wankstains.

I actually think you are making a point against your own stance. These wannabe artists never risk a thing. They do all kinds of shit to get a rise out of the public (confusing infamy with fame), but they rarely put anything on the line. Shitting on a piece of paper was a statement when Brus did it in Vienna in the 60s. Nowadays it's derivative and lame attentionwhoring. But nailing your balls to the red square, cutting off part of your ear sitting on an asylum wall or lighting the FSB front door on fire (all done by Pavlensky) is a fucking statement. Sitting perfectly still and giving visitors knives and a loaded gun just to see what they'll do to you (Abramovic) is a fucking statement.

That's people transcending their own mortal nature to protest an oppressive regime or to teach us something about human nature. Saying, writing or painting about how Russia is a police state or about how humans inherently have the capacity to do evil if left unchecked will get you nowhere. Nobody cares. But putting your own health on the line and *showing* it to us is a different beast entirely and makes the statement so much more powerful.

It's the difference between lecturing about civil rights and taking to the streets for them. It's the difference between condemning facism or islamic terrorism and taking up arms to actually fight Nazis in Europe or ISIS in the middle east. One is impotent, the other heroic.

Having said that - I'm neither here nor there about the drowning video. It speaks to me personally, it's rather unique (albeit self-admittedly derivative), but it's probably not high art. It's interesting, but it lacks a statement. It's probably more of an experience for the artist than the observer.

The red line from his left wrist to the handle is an emergency stop. If you fall off, you automatically pull a pin out of the handle and the motor shuts down. This keeps the vehicle close to you so you can get back on, but mostly it prevents the damn thing from barreling aimlessly into a group of innocent people.

Hard to tell from his perspective, but I think he is even more retarded than you all give him credit. I believe he pulls his left hand away to swipe the side of the ship, inadvertently pulling the safety pin like an idiot. So the motor shuts off, he falls forward and the damn things starts sinking. Then you can see him fumble with the pin to try and restart it, but he goes under due to the drag and waves.

Worked on a mediocrely sized sailing ship once (which we only used the motor on). Captain was drunk and had not realized that the oil in the gearbox was diluded with water and thus unusable. So he came 6 knots heading towards the dock only til he realized the gearbox won't react so in order to save an expensive boat (with people in it) and the dock itself that was a couple of tens of metres in front of us I tried an emergency stop with the mooring line and got two om fingers stuck inbetween which were chrused insantly...

>>
>>1559991
You stupid motherfucker, I bet you've never driven a day in your life. You're probably some NEET who never leaves his room, much less his house.

If you had any experience driving a car, you'd know that you can't see something short that's just in front of your car because the hood blocks your view. You'd also know that when people are stopped and waiting for their light to change, they often take the opportunity to do something else in that break when they don't have to focus on driving. So it's not unreasonable for the driver to not have been looking ahead for only a few seconds the moment that fucker decided to lie down on the road. So when the light turns green, he didn't see anything in front of him and he never saw anyone fall in front of him, so of course he goes forward because it looks like the road is clear. Are you so out of touch with people from your seclusion that you have no ability to see things from other people's point of view?

Furthermore, whenever there's an accident, the legitimacy of each person's actions are called into question. Just because Person A hit Person B because Person A couldn't stop in time to avoid it doesn't mean Person B is absolved of negligence. Was Person B being a reasonable person and using the road in legitimate ways? There's a big difference between Person B suddenly braking to avoid hitting something in front of him and Person B suddenly braking when the road is clear and in good shape. Sometimes people intentionally do things to cause others to hit them. You may have heard of it, it's often called insurance fraud. The difference between insurance fraud and an accident is that in an accident, Person B had a legitimate reason to step on the brakes.

You should pull your head out of your ass and learn about the world around you.

A driver is supposed to be in control of his car at all times, if someone decides to be retarded or is retarded and lays down in the middle of the fucking road it does not ever give you the right to from standing still accelerate and run over top of the retard.

Also driving is a privilege not a right, in order to earn that privilege you promise to follow certain rules, hitting pedestrians under any circumstances, in civilized countries (not US) should be grounds to throw you prison to rot for as long as any other type of murder with a deadly weapon.

Sure, but they could've still waited a few more seconds for the spasms to die down, so they could be absolutely sure he was gone.

Plus, the guy resuscitating him is just incompetent. He's not even doing any chest compressions. The dude could've fucking died.

>Sure, but they could've still waited a few more seconds for the spasms to die down, so they could be absolutely sure he was gone.
If they wanted to kill him, that's the way to go. And it might be more interesting for the viewer, but also fundamentally less safe for the performer. Every minute without oxygen to the brain increases the likelyhood of permanent damage. Pulling him out as soon as he lost conciousness was the right move, medically speaking. Excellent chance of pulling through.

>Plus, the guy resuscitating him is just incompetent. He's not even doing any chest compressions. The dude could've fucking died.
Actually drowning is one of the very few instances where this makes perfect sense. It causes respiratory arrest, not cardiac arrest. If you catch it early enough, the heart is still beating and you just need to get air back into the lungs and everything's peachy. With low oxygen the brain gives out way before every other organ.
First aid teaches to do chest compressions no matter what, because most people have a really hard time checking for a pulse, especially if it's a weak one. If you have no way to determine what kind of arrest knocked the patient out, chest compressions are the safer way to go, but this doesn't apply here, because they know exactly what happened. I still maintain that you have no idea what you're talking about.

>Every minute without oxygen to the brain increases the likelyhood of permanent damage.

But they pull him out like two seconds after he starts thrashing. Surely they could have waited like… five seconds? Ten? It wouldn't have made much difference. As it is, he was barely drowning for even an instant before they removed him.

>It causes respiratory arrest, not cardiac arrest.

So chest compressions are *only* for cardiac arrest? They don't have benefit for respiratory resuscitation at all?
>>
>>1563974
CPR has gone from breathing+compressions to just compressions ("unnecessary risk to rescuer" for little benefit) to compressions plus a little plastic jobber so you don't get cooties or whatever from the guy dying.

Compressions do affect the respiratory system, but you actually have to have proper rhythm (amusingly, the chorus of "stayin' alive" is nearly perfect) and force. You'll often find people resuscitated with CPR have broken or fractured ribs.

On the other side of the coin is the devil's advocate saying that with every second of CPR before the brain regains control of the autonomous systems, the likelihood of the victim regaining full mental acuity drops. Basically, if you do CPR on a dude that's had no pulse and no respiration for 2 minutes, expect to be thanked by someone with permanent brain damage if they even wake up at all.

>>
>>1563974
>So chest compressions are *only* for cardiac arrest? They don't have benefit for respiratory resuscitation at all?
Pretty much yes, it keeps the blood flowing and nothing else. The trachea is too long for the chest compressions to affect much of anything in terms of breathing. You're just pushing air back and forth inside the body. The roundabout 5% of volume you force out at the top during compression never gets back deep into the lungs where the gas exchange happens. Proper CPR is at 100 bpm these days - try it yourself, if you take tiny shallow breaths 100 times a minute if you feel oxygenated.

But it doesn't matter so much, because on an average deep breath we inhale with 21% oxygen in the air and exhale with something like 16%. So there's still plenty of oxygen left in your lungs to be used up, as long as you can keep the blood flowing.

Chest compressions need to be both rhythmic and uninterrupted, because every time you start from rest you need to build up cardiovascular pressure before you achieve circulation. Hence why CPR has evolved a lot in the last few decades from silly shit like 5 and 5 to something more like 30 and 2. And before you don't do anything or some harmful stupid shit, just do the fucking chest compressions until professional help arrives. The guy's already dead. Literally *anything* you do to potentially improve his condition is better than doing nothing and you can't exactly make his condition any worse.

Because of the pulse detecting issue discussed above and the reservations of pressing your mouth on a stranger's discussed by the other poster (>>1564038) the public is increasingly taught to just ignore mouth to mouth. When unconcious, head straight to chest compressions (after all even a drowning victim may have had a heart attack that caused him to drown in the first place, meaning just mouth to mouth would be utterly useless).

I was a bit off, 90% of treatable falls are from 16 feet. But the most common height for a fatal fall is 6-8 feet. But its the most common at 28%. Still interesting how a small fall is more fatal than a slightly taller one. I'm assuming people have slightly more time to brace themselves for the fall. Falling flat on your head compared to having that extra split second to stick your arms out and soften the landing a bit.

As someone who also grew up with severe childhood asthma, I can also confirm that you learn not to freak out. Whenever I'm in a terrifying situation (like when my friend spun out on the highway while I was in the passenger seat) I never yell or say anything, I just tense up a little and stop breathing until I have some control over the situation.
