This thread is giving me that feeling again.
That feeling that I haven't had in a while because my mind has been preoccupied with daily life and business.
That feeling you get when you really think about everything and remember how fucking weird space is. It's just so god damned weird.

Good stuff. I had the same mild panic when I went to my first black hole on Space Engine. The musice changed, the light started warping around a pitch black circle, and I accidentally got stuck to the surface since the travel speed automatically drops super low when you collide with an object. I was sitting there panic-laughing trying to scroll my mouse wheel up as fast as I could before my brain collapsed on itself.
>>
>>1533232
>>1533581
>>1533646
This is Space Engine 2. something I forget.
>>
>>1533394
Well, technically not forever.

Eventually the fabric of spacetime will be expanding so fast, it will exceed the speed of light. When the universe ends, the edge of the known universe will get smaller and smaller, and everything we know will be localized to a tinier sphere. Everything beyond a certain point will be pitch black. That sphere will shrink to the size of the solar system, then the size of the earth.

You might even get to watch the universe being unmade. The sun will go out. Everything will get cold. If you manage to survive that, a pitch blackness will creep along towards you, until nothing is left in the universe but you. And then nothing.

Just something about there being nothingness forever in every direction, right now. Also all the random gasses/rocks that have formed after unimaginable amounts of time bumping into each other in this immense nothingness. I know they're relatively simple things to think about but every time I do it still gives me a feeling like nothing else. I love it.

I don't think that's accurate. A quasar may or may not have a jet.
>>
>>1534183
Just a graphic right? There's no way Space Engine is that pretty/terrifying now.
>>
>>1535293
Ahh you're right. Polar jets aren't the only attribute.

Space engine doesn't properly show quasars though, or label them correctly. All you'd have to go by on whether or not that's a quasar is it's size and proximity to other celestial bodies. If it's near the center of a galaxy or a large density of stars it's probably a quasar.
>>
>>1535430
Google it. Space engine is crazy. If you have a great computer turn your graphics way up and have a good time.

Only thing is the galaxies after a certain distance from the Milky Way are proc generated and the universe is cube-shaped, but they have plans to give the universe it's more accurate known shape in future updates.

You don't know that. It may be rare in this epoch but surely there's some galactic merges going on somewhere in the universe right now. Our galaxy will merge with Andromeda in a few billion years and that's expected to produce a quasar.

I believe it's an Atlas rocket, used by Nasa in the 60s as ICBMs and to launch most of the Mercury program plus the Agena targets used for docking practice during Gemini.

This would've been a satellite or test launch, given that the Mercury program never had a manned launch failure. Pretty cool vid though.

It's a shot from Earth. This kind of view actually only requires fairly basic kit, an 8" or 10" Dobsonian (a few hundred bucks) is good enough to see Saturn like that. You just need to get lucky to have a Saturn-lunar occultation visible from your location.

Even the greatest minds in the world haven't unraveled the mysteries of our Universe.
How do we expect to understand all of it?
Our intellect has taken us far but is still primitive and limited when compared to the grand scale of things.
Sometimes I think about how we developed our eyes in order to perceive light.
We can only observe as the Universe unfolds itself to us...

It just occurred to me that even if we did successfully create a warp drive, it would instantly warp away and be gone forever. And it sure as hell can't be remotely controlled, so any craft that operates on such a system has to be able to reorient itself and perfectly identify our star once again in order to return.

Not that warp drives are likely to ever be created, but it's just something that struck me.

This movie was trash, but I've always hated Hard SF movies done by people who have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to actual science.

Didn't the director or the lead actor say that this movie turned into an atheist because they fully believed that all Christians would totally do what the antagonist did?
>>
>>1581544
>movies done by people who have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to actual science.

I don't remember it being so bad on that front, and Brian Cox's commentary track (although it has been years since I listened to it) was fairly interesting. They put a little more thought into a bunch of elements I wouldn't have imagined they'd bother with.

That's not to say it was approaching perfect - they still fudged an awful lot for various reasons (eg. artificial gravity on the ship; the not very realistic theoretical premise behind the Sun's failure, and the futility of their method to try to kick start it again, etc). But compared to the vast majority of sci-fi films, it seemed to put a bit more effort into trying to give things a somewhat plausible in-Universe explanation.

>Didn't the director or the lead actor say that this movie turned into an atheist because they fully believed that all Christians would totally do what the antagonist did?

I thought their approach was a lot more "agnostic" on this front. Again, going by memory from some of the stuff on the commentary, they set up the psychologist character so it wasn't exactly clear whether he was so interested in the Sun himself because he wanted to understand the impact it was having on other people, or whether he was starting to become personally obsessed in a manner similar to the first ship's captain.

They kept bringing up the "the Sun can kind of feel like a God" element of things, and they even give the (presumably) atheist physicist protagonist a semi-religious experience at the very end of the movie (not to mention the psychologist's death scene, and his reaction during the second ship's captain's death while they were repairing the panels). So I'm really not sure it makes much sense to argue that the movie necessarily went down the "atheist" path. And given that most of the characters were presumably atheists, I'm not sure it's easy to argue what Christians would do?
>>
>>1581544
It wasn't actually that bad even if the premises was silly, and they did put more attention to detail than most space movies do

We have bigger problems than just every trip being potentially a one-way trip.

Ok when you accelerate up to light speed everything ahead of you is going to blue-shift and eventually transition into gamma rays blasting you in your face, this is kind of a problem because shielding against them is really hard but still not impossible.

Behind you everything is going to red-shift and eventually vanish from view as the light can no longer keep up. Now beyond it being real inconvenient because you are blind and deaf for the duration of the travel and being bathed in intense radiation this effectively means you are creating an event horizon behind your ship.

Ok, so what?

This is where the Unruh effect comes into play.

The concept is that a vacuum depends on the observer. Now a quick note here is that we don't mean vacuum as something completely empty as that doesn't really exist. Rather we mean everything is in the very lowest energy states, so very cold.

If you are accelerating and looking at something it won't seem quite as cold. Now for one Gee of acceleration (earth's gravity) this isn't much. About a billion of a Trillionth of a degree.

If you're accelerating fast enough however (like to go faster than light) then it can be a lot hotter. Hot things give off black body radiation. Remember a vacuum isn't empty, it's full of stuff like virtual particles.
[c]
>>
>>1587931

Now Acceleration and Gravity are basically the same thing so this effect looks very similar to the hawking radiation that black holes emit. What this means is that your event horizon trailing your ship because you're moving so fast that light can't keep up isn't LIKE a black hole it basically IS one complete with a lot of hawking radiation. A lot of radiation.

It's been calculated that an event horizon like this would be pretty close to Planck Temperature. Now if you are familiar with Planck distance and time you might think of this as really slow. Planck Temp is the opposite and usually considered the opposite of absolute zero, the very hottest something can possibly be before physics simply breaks altogether. This thing would make the cores of the biggest hottest star feel like Antarctica, and you have this thing following you.
>>
>>1587934
>>1587931
So basically warp drives create black holes behind ships
