The samples in these are often highly-modified, and commonly use repetition of a single cycle in the waveform, which is why a lot of it sounds like instruments.

Personally I avoid using them, but sometimes end up doing it anyways because it sounds a lot better imo

I don't disagree, a lot of this isn't really what would be considered a "youtube poop music video". There are a lot of us, though, that like to use samples to remix original music with the intention of creating something that sounds nice. We consider that a priority to making the samples recognizable, but also want to make good-looking visuals using the sources (regardless of how much they've been "destroyed" audio-wise), which is why a lot of people still like to classify this as "ytpmv", because there's really nothing else to call it.

recognizable samples are just what keep me interested in YTPMV. i just think pushing it past
simple crossfading (i.e, putting it through reaper/melodyne to get the sample to sound tonally smooth)
sort of moves away from the "charm" i find in these videos.

the biggest problem is that we are literally unable to call this type of video anything other than
"ytpmv" and that's a bit debilitating (and embarrassing) when you try to bring up what you work on.

then again, i've been making these for nearly 10 years so my opinion is probably unpopular at this point

and "destroying" was a bit harsh, i'll give you that.
