>I never understood the appeal of that show, turned me off in no time.

It's a natural instinct in some men to fight and prove to himself that he has the skill to kill his enemy and to be a conqueror. The Viking culture glorified service and death in combat like no other civilization in history save perhaps the Spartans. I've been to war and seen heavy combat and this show speaks to those of us who have such experiences. It gives a voice to that primal drive we have inside of us. Every one of my buddies from the military loves this show too.

Also, the conflict/contrast of Christianity vs Paganism is extremely well done and thought provoking. The development of Athelstan's character(a christian monk who was taken as a slave during a raid and turned Pagan) is amazing. He's one of my favorite character's in any show. The show moves pretty fast too. There's not much waiting around for things to happen. In one episode, they talk about and prepare for sailing west and raiding, in the next episode they sail west and raid. There is very little pointless filler(well, at least until season 4)

How far into the series did you watch?
>>
>>1465559
I'm not the guy you replied too, but it takes some love of history and understanding of ancient cultures to understand.

A lot of people nowadays are too used fast paced and cheap entertainment.

Barely managed to finish first season, and mostly because I was watching it with my friend, who was constantly pumped up how good it is and how I will totally love it. He realised I'm really not enjoying it at all, so he never pushed to try make me watch any more episodes.
If it helps, I didn't manage to even finish first season of GoT and also don't understand the appeal (but that one is simple, just tits, sex and violence, which works for many people). In case of Vikings it's just violence.

I guess I'm simply desanitised working as an emergency nurse, since people spilling their guts on a floor are how I make my living, not what I want to see in free time.

Music from Vikings on the other hand is pretty neat and I really enjoy it. I really like the lyrics from some of them.
>>
>>1467467

Fair enough. The second season is the best IMO but if you finished s1 and still weren't feeling it then I guess it's just not your thing. I've never seen GoT so I can't compare.

Wikipedia says it was 150mil budget not 250mil, which is retarded considering video games look better than the animation.

Also i heard Disney actually removed the "of Mars" from the John Carter movie title afterwards to avoid another flop, but it flopped pretty bad too. Disney refuses to do any more mars movies anytime soon.

Literally THE most pretentious film of the decade (and we already had Drive) so far. It was working, until the final act started and it reached M. Night Shyamalan level of "tweeest", only that none of the twists was surprising or shocking, because they were fucking predictable from the start.

According to my brother who served in my countrys army a few years, your accuracy doesn't drop significantly with both eyes open and you are more aware of your surroundings. Granted, it was advice for using our standard service rifles, I don't know if it is true for sniper rifles as well.

Anon...

Between 2007 (6 if you count production time) and 2011 there was a real boom for motion capture. MnM flops and the whole thing goes to shit, since it's expensive and no studio is suddenly willing to back it up.
>>
>>1472939
Because depending on your eyesight and which eye is dominant combined with which hand is dominant, it's just easier to train people aim with both eyes open and hit rather than make them fight natural impulses. The accuracy is not affected, while shooter's awarness is greatly improved (very important in single person shooting rather than having a spotter) and there is no time wasted or confusion when the shooter needs to look around and take aim.

To make it more digestable, since I don't know what's your gun experience:
Close (as in close, not just cover) one of your eyes and look for things through your dominant eye alone for a minute of two. Then out of sudden open the eye.
You will instantly understand why single shooter is more likely to not close not used eye, but just align himself with the scope properly for the eye to not interfere.

Ofc if you plan to be dead-sure to hit someone, you close your eye, but that's when you have limited and exposed targets, rather than emergency situation when you need to kill every motherfucker in the location, without even knowing how many there are and where they are hidden.

You really must be thick if you don't see a difference between scene using specific effects and entire film made using it.
Last major mo-cap films war MnM and Tintin. Assuming they are going to make new Tintin (supposedly in production), the whole thing might be a moot point, but there is a chance the film will flop anyway. Especially since some idiot was accounting American market as the important one for Tintin, rather than everyone else, so go fucking figure

>>
>>1467467
are you one of the form over substance fags?
neither GoT or Vikings about violence, you are missing whole point of the books and this show
>>
>>1476873
No, I'm a nurse.
Have you ever worked in trauma? Having to stabilise a patient that got his leg chopped off during a car accident? Or tend a 8 year old with a razor wire in his guts, because he bet with his friends about climbing that fence?
I do that for a living. And watching carnage in TV is what I definitely don't like nor want to do. Not because it squicks me (believe me, no film ever will be able to convey all the really nauseatic details, like the smell of half-charred body), but because it simply has no appeal for me, nor is entertaining in general. It's simply like I'm still at work.

Besides, pass the "hurr stop pretending it's all about violence durr" crap - both of those series were simply BORING. Their only entertaining - or rather eye-catching - value was high dose of violence (combined with gratitous fanservice in case of GoT). I couldn't care less about any of the characters, their goals or agendas, not to mention the pretentious, "oh so deep" pseudo-philosophical stuff inserted into dialogues in both series. Sorry, I'm just too old for cynicism to have appeal for me and I've got a line of work that collides with it pretty hard anyway.

Compare that with, say, True Detective, which traded off cheap gimmicks for solid performances and tightly-written 8 episodes long story which I enjoyed, even if the plot and all the implications in it were so dark it felt at times as if drinking tar... and asking for more, because it was so good and engaging. Even the obnoxious, overly-cynical character was self-aware how ridiculous he sounds.

Sorry if my tastes and desire to watch different shows than you are hurting you, but like I said - I have limited time after work and watching things that don't endgage me and remind me about my job is not what I want to do with that time.
The biggest irony is I've ended up as a nurse after spending childhood watching ER with my mother. Love this job, but if you have kids - don't let them watch medical dramas.

Now wait, I had the same thought when I first watched it. But consider this, the story takes place before any of the original trilogy, so it could be said that the Empire learned from this engagement and knew that the legs were a weak spot, and increased the armor in those sections.

Those aren't AT-ATs. They're cargo carriers and not as heavily armed/armored as the regular AT-ATs. Note their lack of heavy 'chin' cannons.

If you are 15, it might be good, sure. And it's not about bashing some stupid "hurr underage" meme. It's just the sad realisation the film was too fucking stupid and over any fucking limit to be taken as anything else than pure stupidity. You can have carnage, but when it serves some point. Explosions and chases for the sake of it are just tiresome. Especially if everything is made "quirky" and "strange", when you see it's just copy-pasted from the old Max films and cranked up over the scale.

Oldboy.
Go watch it. It's really good. But preferably, watch entire "Vengeance Trilogy", in chronological order. The first one is a bit sloppy, but helps build the mood. The remaining two - Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - are golden.

And never, ever watch American remake. It's one of those films that completely misses the mark and is utter shit-tier "naturalisation" of a really great story to American audiences.

Best Star Wars movie? It was a war movie about trust and sacrifice. That isn't what Star Wars is about. Star Wars is about adventure, overcoming impossible odds, destiny, the force, etc. Rogue One isn't Star Wars. Thematically, it had nothing to do with Star Wars. The director wanted to make a war movie, and couldn't give two shits which IP he dumped it on.

Rogue One is to Star Wars what the Silent Hill movies are to the game franchise.

And go see it, there is a small chance it will be
still running in theatres or just premiered for you, as the film had really uneven distribution world-wide: Koreans already have a DVD release, while some countries will have a wide release in a week. The biggest irony is how Japan is the last country screening it, with a premiere planned for April, almost a year after original first screening.

>>1488541
Not a problem for me, really. It felt rather than a one massive fan love letter to the general idea behind first three games than actual adaptation. Which was - at least for me - the main reason why it was a good film in the first place. Try to imagine direct adaptation of SH2 instead. It would fail so hard it wouldn't be even funny
>>
>>1488767
It's James Horner, mate. It's almost a given. Plus his music to Commando is so memetic that by doing something original (at least for '85), he pretty much reshaped how music for action films in 80s and early 90s was made.

Fuck, why all the really good composers are dead, while a hack like Zimmer is still shitting out the same soundtrack over and over and over again, just remastering this or that bit of it.
>>
>>1489264
I like to watch films like this from camera recording. Because due to this, all the special effects made with CGI just fall apart and you can focus on the film, rather than the visuals. If the film is good, it will hold out even when robbed from those visuals. If it's bad, it will very visibly start to suck flaccid cock. So for example PoP held out and I went then to cinema to watch it in full glory, but stuff like Avatar or the new SW films was just "Wait, that's it? A feast of CGI?"
>>
>>1489425
The film is literally titled "Soldier". And if you like old-school action films - go watch it. No CGI bullshit, perfect self-awarness how fucking silly it is and a really good cast, all things considered.

Say what you want about this film, hollywood tactics and the absolutely RETARDED ending, but this film did a great job on two things:
- the last weeks of the war and how fucking helpless it was at that point, but the German High Command still not surrendering
- avoiding any form of glorification of just about anyone; you have literal Average Joes taking great joy from pouding already someone laying on the ground and bleeding to death rather than average bullshit from war movies, where Allies are the one getting their ass kicked and desperately and heroically making a stand or fighting against all odds, Private Ryan style or how all the films in the 60s looked like.

That airplane scene is probably the best "show, don't tell" in the war movies to date.

Episode? Aside that it must be from first 5 seasons, if not first 3.

Mars needs moms.

Be warned, it's shit. As in - for-real shit.

It would be pretty boring game, with half of the drinking done in this very scene.
And in the film setting being a soldier means being rised from infancy as one, thus everyone puts so much emphasis in dialogues on the word. The next generation of soldiers are even worse in this regard, because they are literally breed in vats for that, being at this point virtually a human sub-species called "soldier".

Anyone else ever notice that Brad Pitt does the head resting on arms thing in all his movies? It's like it's his signature pose or something.

What a edgy piece of shit film Falling Down is much better.
>>
>>1492806
Falling Down is serious drama.
This one is a satirical take on the same concept.

What next? You will complain about Idiocracy, failing to notice it's a (very) silly screwball comedy using a high concept to get the plot moving?

They couldnt afford a scene with an A-10 so they gave Chow a MP5 and swung him around with ropes.
