The strong of the blade isn't as sharp as the weak. Add the gambeson on top of that and you can pretty much get away unhurt while still being in contact with the opponent's sword.
>>
>>1461597
Yeah, it's a ballsy move, but the other guy gets a sword to the head/throat. As long as there's no forward or back movement of blade, it will only give a surface cut at best.

Grab a kitchen knife, and you can grasp it firmly on the sides and even the blade. As long as you don't let the knife slide forward or back, there's little cutting actually going on.
>>
>>1461423
If you have some good samples of sword and buckler that'd be great, it doesn't get enough love compared to the longsword.

Gambeson are way sturdier than you think against slicing cuts. It's a bit more like doing a disarm by getting a modern gun out of battery, it doesn't seem safe but it is.

One reason I wish sword fighting schools survived is so people wouldn't have to re-create shit from already vague manuals and manuscripts. That's one thing Japanese did right by giving their sword fighting alive if only as a sports discipline. I guess fencing counts in the west, but that's radically different from actual historical fencing.
>>
>>1460783

well a Doppelhänder (it looks too short to be Montante) could weigh as heavy as 3.2 kg, and in the video it looks close to that. I wouldn't be surprised if they are just wearing coating on the sword to make them more blunt.

>>1463737
Doppelhänder were used as a companion to the long pikes in melees. They were also heavy enough to be used as blunt weapons agains't heavy armor, for exemple.

Danelli armouries makes blunt montantes the same size as the one in the webm and it's only 500 grams heavier, remember that blunt weapons are always heavier than their sharp counterparts too and that the black fencer montantes are meant for sparring while the danelli one is a solo training tool.
You don't always want to kill your opponent during sparring.

Reach is king on the field mate!

Spears were historically the most popular weapon for that reason. Once swords grew to montante lengths, people just made their spears longer and called them pikes and suddenly pikes were the most popular weapon on the field until people developed firearms technology to a level at which you could just shoot the pikemen from a distance. If you ever got up close with someone, you just used you bayonet and speared the shit out of people like your ancestors would have.

>on the field where people can come from any angle

If you're surrounded by the enemy, you are fucked regardless.
>>
>>1463432

That's not really a fair comparison simply because kevlar is not as good at stopping bullets as gambeson is at stopping sword cuts. People who gambeson a lot more than they wear kevlar as well.

It's not. There are no continuous European schools. HEMA is a revivalist movement. In Japan some schools have unbroken lineages back to the 1400-1500's
>>
HEMA is so fake. Notice how none of them are dressed as knights, rather they dress like how they want knights to have looked like, which is robocop. No one wants to give credit to actual historical knights, as a human tank looks cool, but he doesn't look so cool dressed in skirts and purple plumes.

Knights always looked pretty faggy, so HEMA fanboys prefer to just ignore the historical part. Dishonest bullshitters.

I don't get why so many HEMA guys like to go with as little kit as possible.
I thought the point was to delve into realistic, historical combat styles, weaponry, techniques, and training. Well not having any armor on changes things a lot. Poking someone in the middle of the chest isn't going to do much, for instance. Even cheap breastplates could take a decent thrust with little more than some bruising.
>>
>>1466043
>Poking someone in the middle of the chest isn't going to do much, for instance. Even cheap breastplates could take a decent thrust with little more than some bruising.
But that implies that you're wearing armor and most HEMA clubs as I understand it practice unarmored systems. Then it becomes a question of how much protection can you get to be safe but without so much that you're affecting how you would fight/train.
>>
>>1466043
same way soldiers try to get away with as minimal protective armor they can. Comfort and mobility.
>>
>>1466046
that would be fine if they weren't going by the rules of a hit is the win
I could see going for as little protection as possible if sticking to weapons that were meant for that sort of scenario.
>>
>>1466049
That jacket has extra padding in the front to prevent a thrust from causing major damage. So it is enough protection, and it leaves them hurt just enough to want to guard themselves

You should realize that there were techniques (and whole schools) of swordplay for both armored and unarmored combat (in both Western and Eastern sowerdplsy, too).
You can't say "a poke wouldbn't work because there's armor in the way" if they are recreating unarmored combat - and if you fight an unarmored oponent yet limit yourself to armored techniques, you are at a disadvantage.
>>
>>1465370
Most, if not all, of the guys I've met while doing HMB/ACL all acknowledge that this is basically grown men playing swords. The only time people get butthurt about the historical accuracy is when autistic HEMAfags come rushing in and start pointing out how x y and z isn't accurate.

Seriously, outside of that joke of a "authenticity committee", no one actually thinks what they're doing is in anyway historically accurate.

Besides, to play devil's advocate, this is probably what a clash would look like back in the day. Not everyone had the training that knights and nobles got, so it very well could have just been a bunch of dudes piling into each other and trying to kill another as fast as possible
>>
>>1463432
There's nothing very safe when swords start swinging, man.

It's sub-optimal, but a small chance of getting cut THROUGH your gambeson if your opponent manages to pull away from your grip on his guard is preferable to your opponent having a totally free sword, enough that it's a smart move.

this is called Glima. It's an old Viking wrestling game they played. Basically, you win by getting the other person on the ground while you're NOT on the ground. It's not as intense, but it's designed to be a fun sport rather than hardcore warrior training.

They'd also do a gauntlet thing where two fight, and the winner immediately runs around a circle to the next person who then engages them. It's like duck-duck-goose with fighting.

Depends on the plate and the era really. Munitions grade stuff was pretty widely available but custom made stuff was likely to be more expensive, sure.

Also, chainmail is more time consuming and expensive to make typically speaking so really it being ''poor persons armour'' only applies if one assumes it was passed down generation to generation. And by that point, chances were you could afford or gain access to munitions grade plate.

That's a breast plate, made from modern steel, it's probably purer than 90% of the steel that was worn during the 15th. But still at the battle of Verneuil the English long-bowmen were caught off-gard by the resistance of the new steel tempered Armor of the Italian mercenaries. Still it didn't help the french win the battle and the actual effect the more restistant armor had is debatable. When you get hit by an arrow while charging full speed on a horse you probably would get the wind knocked out of you at best and in most cases would get dismounted. An arrow fired by a english longbow is about 80 joules I think concentrated on a 1x1 centimeter. That's like a mike tyson punch to the groin.
>>
>>1471832

i would be mad too if i was a participant of the fake, non-recognized pseudo-sport cousin of the actual real sport

you probably can't even stretch your legs as far as that fencer, let alone perform that movement to any degree of accuracy or speed.
>>
>>1477125
Well HEMA is more of a historical endeavor than sport. Since historical accuracy is very important it is best if it keeps a certain distance from becoming a standard sport. Since that would cause changes that hurt the historic party in favor of scoring accuracy and safety.

HEMAfags just laugh at sport fencers who call themselves swordsmen with their flimsy metal wire.

>Why does this look like Mount&Blade tournament with the AI on easy ?/why are 3-4 guys wailing on one ?
Because they aren't trained, it's just hobby for most people who fight there, it's getting pretty fucking hot in these armors, all weapons are blunt and rules say that you lose when you fall or your knee touches the ground which makes it just armored, retarded judo. Ganging up on someone increases your chances, and sometimes you need few people if tournament is hosted in tight place with no rules regarding fences, which makes fight turn into fencehugging.
>Do you actually need to pay to see this IRL ?
iirc yes

>>1474379
It's pretty niche in europe. If you were watching BoN 2016 and saw interviews, you'd see it's much bigger in eastern europe, especially russia and ukraine. There they have their own championships with huge number of fighters, like few hundreds, so only the best of the best get sent to world championship, which is also why it almost always ends up being russians on highest places, then ukrainians, then rest of slavs like poles and then the rest of europe. New worlders in last BoN were pretty bad with americans being best of them.

They usually practice medieval swordfencing as taught by the old masters. If you look into a fencing book you see all the illustrations of the fighters without gear. They just wear normal clothes. These fencing books were made for mainly instructing fencing in the sense of dueling. Of course you can also use them in actual combat and in contrast to popular belief, knight's armor wasn't all stiff and stocky. I don't have the webm, but there are recordings of a guy in plate running, rolling and vaulting. And if you were someone fighting in armor regularly you had the needed strength and endurance to use these techniques.
