Sure, I'm not arguing that the "problems" don't exist. I'm merely arguing that YouTube's algorithm changes demand variety and experimentation from existing YouTubers. They need to keep up, or drop out. The fact of the matter is that YouTube's changes (bugs not included) mostly affect YouTubers who probably don't "deserve" the views they're getting anyway. Maybe that's a harsh way to put it, but let me explain:

I don't care if a YouTuber is *productive*. I care if their content is entertaining. There are a number of YouTubers - I'd include Dodger among them - who got famous a few years ago, slumped into a bit of a routine of content creation, and are now operating on a boring, slowly-dying channel that is propped up almost entirely by the remnants of their previous popularity. Their videos/channels were showing up in YouTube's recommendations *because* of this previous popularity, not because of the quality/interest of their current videos. The smaller active up-and-coming channels who are trying something new *are* the ones who "deserve" those views, and YouTube is starting to support this more. See Robbaz's recent video on the issue, I think he gets this point exactly right.

YouTube isn't killing these past-their-prime channels, the channel owners are. YouTube's current algorithm changes are just hastening their inevitable downfall while simultaneously giving a leg up to the little guys. It's hard to see this as anything but a good change from the audience's perspective.

That's the crux of the issue. "YouTube is KILLING my channel because they've changed the system such that people who weren't heavily invested in my content in the first place are now being recommended a greater range of interesting new options instead of just being funneled to my channel!!"

YouTube has *always* been horrible at transparency, so there is nothing new here. And the algorithms seem to be in a constant state of flux, so arguably, from YouTube's perspective, the last few weeks have been business as usual. But that's mostly just me being cute, I can totally see all this being annoying as hell for content creators. But realistically, all they can do is get on with the job and try to keep up with the times.

I don't *want* the big lumbering dinosaurs of YouTube to be dictating to YouTube how things should be run, because that's just encourages the same kind of stagnation we're seeing with Dodger's channel. I *want* these people to be on their feet doing something interesting.

Not really. At least, not compared to all their previous changes. YouTube makes it a point to not discuss how any of it's algorithms work (see the few Numberphile YouTube videos about view counting, for example) exactly because they don't want people gaming the system. This is a good thing. But YouTubers work out what the systems favour very quickly anyway, so basic adaption isn't too much of an issue.

I guess the question I always ask myself when I see a big (or previously big) YouTuber complain about this stuff is: "What are you doing to keep your channel fresh and your audience engaged?" 99 times in 100, the answer is "nothing".

Very few of the bugs are new, they occur (seemingly) whenever YouTube does a big update to the various recommendations/subscribers/etc systems. It's possible (probable?) that many of them are just temporary database synch errors as all the updates roll out system wide, and associated bugs.

If the above, there's nothing to really address. None of this stuff is new, and it usually goes away in fairly short order (everyone bitches about it for a week, then nothing much until the next update). Given that YouTube has historically liked to keep tight lipped about algorithm changes to try to soften the effect of people trying to game the system, it's not surprising that they don't outright announce anything during these periods.

There was a great article the other day explaining why YouTube is *probably* correct in saying there is no unsubscribe bug, and that it's *probably* just user error. YouTube's changes to reducing the number of subscribed videos showing up on the user's front page just made it stand out a lot more - if you had accidentally unsubscribed sometime earlier, you probably wouldn't have noticed because the same videos would be showing up in your front-page subscriptions panel anyway.

It's a few weeks on, and nobody has been able to come up with any hard examples of the "bug" in action (although, granted, it's a difficult bug to actually document). And it's a "bug" that has existed for years, so it doesn't make sense for it to keep reoccurring on YouTube's side.

But it's cute that so many YouTubers have been kicking up a stink about a problem which *probably doesn't exist in the first place*. It's hard to argue that these same people can effectively judge any of their demographic statistics and plot a course of their channel when they're complaining about something they literally could not detect in said statistics.

IQ is a poor way to judge this sort of thing.

For example, if she's already in a pretty good spot, the "lazy" route can easily trump the "smart" route in terms of living a comfortable life. You could actually put the time/effort into trying to Google/troubleshoot solutions to software issues ... or you could just sit back, whine about it, and get someone to do it for you (or garner enough sympathy to just not release the video at all). When it comes to this sort of Dodger incompetence, it's hard to judge whether it's laziness or not. Certainly laziness does come into it though.

But I think it's safe to argue that she's not the sharpest tool in the shed. Those Intel unboxing videos are pretty good examples of her failures at critical thinking and logic. Probably not hugely fair to argue that she's a total dummy because of these videos (heck, put me on camera and have me try to solve some puzzle and I'll probably under-perform too), but they're reasonable examples of this sort of thing none-the-less.

But at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter too much. Nobody is watching Dodger because she's "smart", and "dumb" people can be totally productive, creative, and fun all the same. It's the laziness that's the problem.
