Well maybe this is a good place to ask for advice.

Basically I have this really autistic story from my childhood that I want to tell somehow. Now, I have an outline of the plot, and I have written 330,000 words of it, but it is very fragmented and it's only about 5% of the plot, to be honest. So I am starting to realize I may never finish this, although I am finally cutting down parts of the writing that don't need to exist and adapting a minimalist standpoint on description so I can get through as much as possible. However I feel like this story is more of a movie than a book. It always has been and I wanted to make it a movie. But I have next to zero artistic ability. Even my pixel art is fairly terrible. But I am curious if something like pic related is watchable? I don't know what to do for dialogue at the moment... subtitles? Speech bubbles? Also unsure what to do with sound because there is only so much I can do with free sound effects and amateur foley art. I don't know. am just curious what you think. It's horridly autistic and I am not expecting it to be any sort of masterpiece, but I am wondering if I am wasting my time completely.

Did you play at all with the frame timing in this or is the entire animation one speed? This is fairly passable for pixel storytelling and integrating word bubbles/subtitles could make for a decent little storytime. The next thing I might look into improving this style is little static background animations and flickers (like making the stars twinkle in the sky or making the city lights below shift in the mountain climbing scene.... actually I can think of a neat little effect if I get the time to throw it together.)

Forget about your story. Waste no more time on it.

You're talented enough that more realistic projects are worth your time. Is your art watchable? Highly fucking watchable. You have an eye for quality. Even the way you structure your post I can tell you have a brain.

Your characters will show up in some form in all the art you ever do, so don't worry about losing them to go work on something else if that's the sort of thing that concerns you.

If you're procrastinating on moving on to other projects because you have no self-confidence, that's a sign of this crippling social rot that everybody seems to have these days that draws them all into their bedrooms. If that's the case then this story is probably your artistic safety blanket, a good palate for early experimentation, your chance to find your voice.

A story like this is your baby so you shouldn't keep working on it until you have become/gained the trust of the head writer for the video game studio where you can really be sure it'll be done to justice.

Until then you should forget about it. Put it to bed for now. Start a second story. Finish it. Start a third story. Finish it. Your first 10 stories are going to suck compared to your second 10, and all those are going to suck compared to what you're doing in your 50s. If you're autistic and like writing at least be one of those interesting ones like Charles Hamilton or Henry Darger so when you die you leave an enormous body of work and get a Wikipedia page

Yeah Henry Darger is one of my favorite people in the world. I really wish someone had scanned his stuff in and made it available somewhere. I've heard his writing is horrible and unreadable but it'd still be interesting to look at. I watched the PBS special about the guy and it fascinated me.

I will likely end up like him. I do wish to make something more palatable to people, though. My writing is certainly less obtuse; at the very least, I don't spiral off into tangents lasting hundreds of pages. So maybe a pretty low bar.

Pixel art takes a long time but I enjoy it.

It speeds up as you get used to the forms and shapes. I'd say the first frames took around 3 minutes while by the end I was able to do each in one minute.

Here's the concept for it. It was the final project of my animation coruse but I had to do it while I was in college so in order to save time I did the animation tests with my 3Ds in the train.
