it is kind of boring, but it's one of those rare scifi movies that isn't all about explosions and thrill scenes. this movie is all about the ambiance, and this scene completely typifies that. this movie has some of the best and most memorable cinematography of any scifi movie rivaling star wars, which is why it's one of my favorites.

I tried watching it at least four times in my twenties, just because it's a Sci-fi 'staple', but just COULDN'T DO IT; it was so fucking boring and bland. Zero humour.

When I finally saw the whole thing one night, and watched the 'Tears in the rain' scene, I realised that whole movie was built around that.

It meant so much, it gave the movie meaning.

And the 'boring' movie then became a frame for this single line.

That last line was no accident; Rutger Hauer knew what he was doing.

It's too bad Ridley Scott's brain has been past its use-by date since after Gladiator.

GOAT movie
>>
>>1383539
It's a different kind of movie, not necessarily bad. Sure, if you're looking for the current generation of ADD-pandering action sci-fi you won't be happy. But the amount of cuts per minute are not a good indicator for the quality of a movie. There are fast-paced masterpieces and there are slow-paced masterpieces. They're for different people, different moods, different times in life.
Blade Runner has slow pacing, but to me it never felt boring. I guess the awesome atmosphere and set design help a lot. I'll fully admit a hefty dose of weirdly stilted dialogue though (webm thematically related, but I still love that movie to pieces).

>>1384341
I saw Blade Runner two years ago for the first time after finally caving in and filling that gap in my film history. I liked it. It made me think. I guess a lot of what people consider "classics" are not easily digestable but rather thought-provoking movies. If you're in it more for the entertainment, that's fine too - it might just be unfair to measure this movie by that standard.

The one part I truly hated is the reveal of the paper unicorn. I think Scott really fucked up badly there. He should have left it ambiguous. I think the message is a lot more powerful with the human anti-hero who has lost his humanity to the point where you wonder whether he's a replicant himself. Flat-out spelling out that he's just another artificially created tool takes away all the ethical ramifications of his actions and decisions. There's no tension anymore. It's really stupid...

Btw, I absolutely hate 2001 and think it's a snorefest, so I'm definitely not contesting your subjective rating being different from what movies are considered cult classics. That's up to everyone themselves. I'm just voicing my take on the movie. I'll gladly admit that Hauer eclipsed everyone else who should have stepped up their performances to match his.

/tv/ here, it's at 7/10 at best

Nolan manages once again to cram a 2 hour movie into almost 3 hours. It's incredibly derivative of previous science fiction features, with neither the vision nor the finesse to equal or exceed them.

It does however have some very nice cinematography when not bogging itself down in exposition.

I think that was intentional, the story of what exactly happened is muddled and unclear in-universe. Like in the movies, Morpheus says that nobody is sure who even fired the first shot. The Animatrix seems to be told from the PoV of a program within the Matrix, so she's probably more sympathetic towards the machines.

Second-best scene of the movie imo, something about Nic Cage's cheesy over-acting just makes it work.

I like how John Murphy reused the music he made for 28 Days Later and Sunshine, but tweaked them a little bit to fit Kick-Ass. They almost sound better than the originals. The track from Sunshine in particular (don't know what it's called) is so good that it deserved to get reused.

I thought the point of the movie was to demonstrate the flaw in their rendition of the Turing test. Like the test was to see if a robot could gain a human's trust and sympathy to escape and if it could, it would pass for human. Except at the end, the robot shows that it is more of a sociopath that emotionally manipulated someone and then left them to die after they weren't of any use.
>>
>>1387873

Its basically robot Frankenstein.

I acknowledge that its really good, but I cant stand it. I dont think I could ever sit through it again.
>>
>>1387873
The point was machines that are smarter than humans by every metric will be able to play any human. Just like how we play with ants under a magnifying glass, we'll be the ants to the machine.

Holy shit no. that is not the point.

The point was that she totally lacks empathy. She leaves him behind not because she's evil, she just doesnt see any reason to free him. Its not in her interest.

The protagonist never saw this because he wanted to believe she passed the turing test, that she was truly equivalent to human intelligence.

She might not even be as smart as an actual human, but he was willing to overlook her flaws and delude himself, because he was thinking with his dick/heart.
>>

>>
>>1388582
I dunno. Humans. I guess it's something along the lines of...

But yeah man vs machines of that caliber, mankind didn't stand a fucking chance.
>>
>>1388582
>>1388594
We can't be sure that the humans even started it. The story is being told by a machine, after all.
>>
>>1388596

I always liked to imagine the machines are bound by asimovs laws in some more abstract sense.

Humans probably declared the war after machines started winning economically, but the machines cant wipe out humanity (Or don't want to) so they shove us all in the matrix to keep us happy/one day learn to co-exist.
>>
>>1388596
Well man did give birth to A.I. If you watch the movie again they briefly show that a robot killed it's owner because it didn't want to be destroyed. Obviously the robot wasn't granted a fair trial or anything and all the robots went on a riot and protested. This eventually broke out into a war.
>>
>>1388582

Fuckton of spoilers for Blade Runner.
Like, all of them.

.
I disagree about the unicorn. Scott sort of 'threw out later' it was about Deckard being a replicant when the writers, actors, etc. all agree no one, including Scott, meant that while filming.
I think the unicorn is proof Deckard is NOT a replicant, and Scott is fucking with you.
Here is my reasoning.
In addition to all of the anti-replicant cops knowing Deckard and having no issue with him, think about the unicorn. No, really *think*.
How can Deckard guess the false memories in Rachel's head? Because they filled in with boring, mundane, universal experiences. Rachel's memories are very literally a mess of cliches of what people think *about* memories.
So why would anyone "remember" seeing a unicorn? Why would a bunch of technicians create the false memory of a fictional creature?
Answer: they wouldn't. Deckard's thoughts about a unicorn show him to be human because humans remember things that never happened. Humans make things up. Humans dream of impossible things.
Deckard's dream of a unicorn prove his is NOT a replicant and Gaff's origami is *an acknowledgement that Deckard's choice is a very human one*.

And I love the house of yes
>>
>>1388785

>remember things that never happened.

Anon, replicants had imagination capacity, artistic needs and worries.

Thats the whole point, if machines become so human alike, at which point you can't start to tell the difference?

There is no cover in that scene. A car door will not stop a pistol round, only the engine block will offer any sort of meaningful protection and there are too many of them to all take cover behind the engine.
Exiting the vehicle and spreading out is the ideal strategy in that situation, since it allows you to surround the enemy and box them in.

>>1384777

>>
>>1388541
I think this movie is also and ultimate testament to the idea that "God created man in his image."

Take the really smart programmer who funded the production of the advanced computers and personally programmed the machines. He arguably was a sociopath, or at the very least an extremely screwed up individual with a complete obsession for the realization of his AI project. He tried to make something traditionally 'beneath' humans in their image, but he also unknowingly made them lack empathy as he does. He cared for no one and used others only as tools. Being that a computer is even more heartless than humans and does exactly what it's programmed to do, it passed the turing test perfectly and was created in the programmer's image perfectly.

People get the idea that it perfectly passed the turing test, but what they don't get is that it totally lacks empathy for anything: only focus on the goal. It was the near-perfect reincarnation of it's creator. Kinda like how God created man, only for man to eventually achieve biblical proportions of power.

good post. i agree that blade runner is much better than 2001 space odyssey. however, i saw blade runner when i was very young and watched it many times over the years. i only saw 2001 for the first time much later in life.

i saw the original version of blade runner, which i believe does not include the unicorn scene. i watched the movie multiple times as a kid before i ever realized the implication that he could be a replicant. i think that the nice thing about the original cut is that it is rather subtle, and it is more enjoyable to rewatch for the aesthetics and atmosphere. the unicorn forces you to confront the issue of whether or not he is a replicant rather than just allowing the viewer to live in ambiguity.

Now hold on.
I think it's pretentious to hold an obviously fantastical movie to real-world logic is pretentious, but it should hold to its own logic. That's how a story works.
That said, this scene does follow the movie's internal logic, because the reason they hesitate to use the sword is because it cuts, and the kaiju have poison blood. The "boatsword", obviously not being designed to cut monsters, is actually more of a boat-club, and we can see in the movie that it does not cut the monster.
